King James wording
King James Version
Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.THE KEY
Joseph, the name linked with adding, makes the whole household present at once: family, flocks, herds, and everything they carry.
THE MEANING
You do not arrive as a solitary name: the people and the means of life bound to you come into view with you. Joseph speaks the whole household before Pharaoh, and the verse places them in Goshen. Entry here is the arrival of a whole life, not just its spokesperson.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that only the individual counts at a threshold loosens here: this arrival includes kin, animals, and possessions.
THE ROOT
וַיַּגֵּד
wayyaggēd
GROWS FROM
נגד
n-g-d
Declare or report; make known.
The verb translated “told” belongs to the same root family as neged, “before” or “in front of,” and nagid, “leader.” Joseph’s report places the arriving household before Pharaoh’s attention as a whole.
ALSO GROWS
neged: Before, in front of, opposite.
נֶגֶד
The family is brought into Pharaoh’s view through Joseph’s report.
nāgîd: Leader, ruler, prince.
נָגִיד
This related word for a leader echoes the report’s setting: the household is made known before the ruler.
בָּאוּ
bāʾû
GROWS FROM
בוא
b-w-ʾ
Come, enter, arrive.
“are come” in this verse is bāʾû. The Hebrew verb baʾu presents the family as arriving or entering; “from the land of Canaan” names where they come from. The verse holds that arrival together with the substance they bring: flocks, herds, and all they have.
ALSO GROWS
mābôʾ: Entrance, approach.
מָבוֹא
An entrance is the threshold implied by the family’s coming into Goshen.
tevuʾāh: Produce, yield, income.
תְּבוּאָה
This root can also name what comes in as yield, adding a material echo to the family’s arrival with possessions and livestock.
יוֹסֵף
yôsēf
GROWS FROM
יסף
y-s-p
Add, increase, continue.
Joseph’s name is associated in Genesis 30:24 with the hope that God will add another son. Here he speaks for a family arriving with all that belongs to it, so the name’s echo of adding meets a visibly enlarged household.
ALSO GROWS
yāsaf: To add, increase, continue.
יָסַף
The name Joseph carries this root of addition into the scene as more of the family enters Pharaoh’s awareness.
wayyōsef: And he added, or continued.
וַיֹּסֶף
This biblical form shows the root describing addition or continuation, echoing the family’s arrival with its whole life attached.
THE PATTERN
A crossing into a new place carries the household and its means of life as a whole.
And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all the goods they had gathered, and the living souls they had made in Haran. And they went out to go into the land of Canaan, and into the land of Canaan they came. And they took their cattle, and their gathered goods which they had gained in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob and all his seed with him. Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob to himself, and all his kin, seventy-five living souls.THE THREAD
And Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's house, I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and say to him, My brothers and my father's house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.Joseph has already said he will show Pharaoh who has arrived; the Hebrew root of “shew” here is נגד (n-g-d), the same root behind “told” in Genesis 47:1. The next verse fulfills that plan by making the household’s arrival visible to Pharaoh.
