King James wording
King James Version
And he said, Swear unto me. And he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed’s head.THE KEY
The Hebrew word at the bed’s head also carries the staff reading: Israel’s final bow takes place in rest or while leaning on support.
THE MEANING
An oath passes from spoken request to spoken answer, and Israel responds with a bow. The Hebrew consonants at “bed” also admit the staff reading preserved in Hebrews 11:21, so the same final gesture appears either at rest or supported on a staff. His lowered posture gives the promise a visible form.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that reverence requires a strong, upright body is undone here: Israel bows at his bed’s head, or, in Hebrews’ reading, while leaning on his staff.
THE ROOT
מִטָּה
mittah
GROWS FROM
נטה
nṭh
stretch out, spread, incline
“head of the bed” in this verse is mittah. The Hebrew consonants at “bed” can be read as מִטָּה (mittah), bed, or מַטֶּה (matteh), staff, the reading followed in Hebrews 11:21. The related images hold both a surface spread for rest and an extended support beneath the bow.
ALSO GROWS
mittah: bed, couch
מִטָּה
A place spread out for the body to rest; this is the reading in Genesis’s Hebrew vocalization.
matteh: staff, rod
מַטֶּה
An extended support; this reading pictures Israel leaning as he bows.
וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ
vayyishtachu
GROWS FROM
שחה
sh-ch-h
bow low, prostrate oneself
“bowed down” in this verse is vayyishtachu. The Hebrew describes a bodily lowering that also serves as worship. English can separate posture from reverence, while this word lets the same bow carry both.
ALSO GROWS
hishtachava’ah: bowing down, worship
הִשְׁתַּחֲוָאָה
The same root names worship through the body’s act of lowering.
mishtachaveh: one who bows down
מִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה
The person is described through an enacted posture, making reverence visible.
הִשָּׁבְעָה
hishav‘ah
GROWS FROM
שבע
sh-b-ʿ
swear, bind oneself by oath; traditionally linked with “seven”
“swear” in this verse is hishav‘ah. The oath word is traditionally linked to שֶׁבַע (sheva), “seven”; Genesis makes the association concrete in the seven ewe lambs and sworn agreement at Beersheba. Here the spoken pledge is immediately answered by a bodily bow.
ALSO GROWS
shevuah: oath
שְׁבוּעָה
The shared root names the binding pledge Israel requests and receives.
sheva: seven
שֶׁבַע
Genesis 21:28–31 pairs seven ewe lambs with the sworn agreement at Beersheba.
THE PATTERN
Reverence becomes visible in the body’s act of bowing.
And David said to all the assembly, Now bless the LORD your God. And all the assembly blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and bowed their heads, and bowed down to the LORD and to the king.Enter, let us bow down and kneel before the face of the LORD who makes us.The twenty-four older ones fall down before the one who sits upon the throne, and bow down to the one who lives into the ages of the ages, and throw their crowns before the throne, saying,THE THREAD
By trust Jacob, dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and bowed down upon the top of his staff.Hebrews 11:21 preserves the staff reading of the Hebrew consonants that Genesis vocalizes as “bed.” That reading makes the posture tactile: Jacob bows while leaning on support, where Genesis’s wording lets him bow from his bed’s head.
