King James wording
King James Version
Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father.THE KEY
The Hebrew repeats one verb for “hear” and “hearken,” making attentive hearing the purpose of the gathering.
THE MEANING
The call reaches you as part of a gathered people: come into shared attention and receive the words addressed to you. The father is named both Jacob and Israel, the heel-holder and the one who wrestles with God, so the summons speaks through an identity shaped by struggle.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being present among others is not the same as receiving what is said; the verse places attentive hearing at the center of the gathering.
THE ROOT
שִׁמְעוּ
shimʿu
GROWS FROM
שמע
š-m-ʿ
To hear, listen, or heed.
“hear and respond” in this verse is shimʿu. The Hebrew uses the same verb twice, though English renders it first as “hear” and then as “hearken.” That echo makes the second command deepen the first: hearing here is attentive reception, directed toward the father’s words.
ALSO GROWS
shemuʿah: A report, tidings, or something heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
The branch carries hearing outward into what is received and passed on.
shamoaʿ: Listening or hearing; in context, heedful listening.
שְׁמֹעַ
This form appears in the saying that listening is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22), showing how hearing can carry a response.
הִקָּבְצוּ
hiqqavtsu
GROWS FROM
קבץ
q-b-ts
To gather or collect together.
“gather yourselves together” in this verse is hiqqavtsu. The verse begins by drawing many people into one shared space, then repeats the call to hear. The movement is from being gathered together to receiving the words together.
ALSO GROWS
qibbēts: Gathered or collected.
קִבֵּץ
This form shows the same root as an act that brings scattered things into a group.
mequbbatsim: Those who have been gathered.
מְקֻבָּצִים
The gathered are not only the ones doing the assembling; the root also names people brought together.
THE PATTERN
A summons gathers people into shared hearing, where words become personally received and answered.
Hear and respond, O Israel. The LORD our God is one LORD.And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak, for your servant hears and responds. My sheep hear and respond to my voice, and I perceive them, and they follow me.THE THREAD
Hear and respond, O Israel. The LORD our God is one LORD.Genesis 49:2 repeats שמע (shamaʿ), “hear,” and Deuteronomy 6:4 begins with that same Hebrew verb addressed to Israel. The shared root makes hearing a hinge between the father’s summons and the people’s identity.
