King James wording
King James Version
And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.THE KEY
The same Hebrew root gathers Jacob’s feet into bed and gathers him to his people, holding bodily completion and belonging in one movement.
THE MEANING
When your life reaches completion, this verse gives two images: feet gathered into a bed, and a person gathered to their people. Dying stands beside belonging, so the ending is not named only as disappearance.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that life’s ending can only mean isolation or erasure: here, the dead are named as gathered to their people.
THE ROOT
אָסַף
asaph
GROWS FROM
אסף
To gather, collect, or draw in.
“gathered his feet up” in this verse is asaph. English says “gathered up” and then “was gathered,” but both come from the same root: first Jacob draws his feet inward, then he himself is gathered in. The language moves from gathering the body to being gathered among his people, letting bodily completion and belonging share one seed.
ALSO GROWS
wayye’esof: The active form of the verb: to gather or draw together.
וַיֶּאֱסֹף
This is the word used as Jacob draws his feet into the bed.
wayye’asef: The passive form: to be gathered in.
וַיֵּאָסֶף
The same root now names Jacob’s being gathered to his people.
asif: The gathering in of a harvest.
אָסִיף
This branch gives the root a sense of bringing what has reached its fullness into a gathered whole.
THE PATTERN
Gathering draws the scattered, forsaken, or far off into belonging.
The Lord GOD, who gathers the driven ones of Israel, says, Yet I will gather others to him, beside those already gathered to him. When my father and my mother let go of me, then the LORD gathers me in.And he sends his messengers with a great trumpet, and they gather his picked-out ones from the four winds, from the edges of the heavens to their edges.THE THREAD
When my father and my mother let go of me, then the LORD gathers me in.The Hebrew verb behind “take me up” comes from the same root as Jacob’s being gathered to his people. Where human bonds forsake, this verse names being gathered in; belonging continues to speak through the same root.
