This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:

The years count one life, while “begat a son” opens that life into the next generation.

Your life is more than its private span; you stand within a chain of lives that brought you here, and life continues through others beyond you. The verse places one measured lifetime beside the beginning of another.

וַיּוֹלֶד

wayyoled

GROWS FROM

ילד

to beget, bear, or bring forth

“brought forth” in this verse is wayyoled. English “begat” can sound like a single completed act, but this root also gives words for the child and for generations. The verse sets Lamech’s years beside the life that emerges from them, so his measured span opens into a new generation.

ALSO GROWS

yeled: child

יֶלֶד

The child is the direct branch of the act named “begat.”

toledot: generations, descendants

תּוֹלְדוֹת

This branch names the unfolding line of lives that one birth begins.

וַיְחִי

waychi

GROWS FROM

חיה

to live, be alive

The root of “lived” also appears in words that name the living and life itself. Beside ⁨ילד⁩, it holds a life being lived together with a life being brought forth.

ALSO GROWS

chai: living, alive

חַי

It names the living state expressed by Lamech’s years.

chayyim: life

חַיִּים

It makes visible the wider reality contained within the verse’s simple count of years.

A measured human life sits within the continuation of life through children and generations.

And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and brought forth a son in his own likeness, after his image, and called his name Seth.
Genesis 5:3 · SDVThe same pairing of living and begetting places Adam’s years beside the life carried forward in Seth.
Look, children are the LORD's portion; and the fruit of the womb is a wage.
Psalm 127:3 · SDVChildren appear as life received and carried into what comes next.
The book of the origin of Jesus, the anointed one, son of David, son of Abraham.
Matthew 1:1 · SDVThe verse names a continuing line of generations through which one life is connected to those before it.
And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and brought forth a son in his own likeness, after his image, and called his name Seth.
Genesis 5:3 · SDV

Genesis 5:3 repeats the same roots for “lived” and “begat,” while Adam (⁨אָדָם⁩, adam, “ground-being”) places the line in humanity’s connection to the ground. The repeated wording lets Lamech’s measured life echo the same pattern: years beside life continuing in a son.
