King James wording
King James Version
And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:THE KEY
In Hebrew, the sons’ doing is the command made visible.
THE MEANING
A word received from someone can move beyond speech and live in the hands of the one who hears it. Right now, what is entrusted to you becomes visible in what you do with it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that a command ends with the one who speaks it: what is received can continue as action in someone else’s hands.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעֲשׂוּ
wayyaʿasu
GROWS FROM
עשׂה
to do, make, or bring about
“did” in this verse is wayyaʿasu. The sons’ doing is the completion of the instruction: the word takes shape as a deed. Hebrew keeps “do,” “make,” and “work” in one root family, joining what is received to what is carried out.
ALSO GROWS
maʿaseh: deed, work, or act
מַעֲשֶׂה
The command becomes a deed through the sons’ action.
asiyah: doing or making
עֲשִׂיָּה
The root names the process by which an intention takes form.
צִוָּם
tsivvam
GROWS FROM
צוה
to command or charge
The word for “commanded” belongs to the same root family as “commandment.” Here, a charge is not left as speech: the following verb shows it becoming action.
ALSO GROWS
mitzvah: commandment
מִצְוָה
It shares the root of the specific charge the sons carry out.
tsav: command or charge
צַו
It echoes the direct instruction that gives the sons’ action its shape.
THE PATTERN
A received word becomes visible when it passes into action.
And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so they did.But be makers of the word, and not hearers only, miscounting yourselves. His mother said to the servants, Whatever he says to you, do it.THE THREAD
And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so they did.Exodus repeats the same Hebrew roots for “did” (עשׂה) and “commanded” (צוה). As in Genesis, the charge reaches its visible form in the action that follows.
