This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

Joseph’s reassurance rests on a boundary: power over his brothers does not make him God’s replacement.

When you fear that harm will be returned to you, Joseph’s words meet that fear with restraint. He refuses to treat himself as God’s substitute or final judge. The verse places human power beneath God, where revenge is not its automatic answer.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that someone who holds power over you must answer injury with retaliation.

אַל־תִּירָאוּ

al-tira'u

GROWS FROM

ירא

y-r-ʾ

To fear or stand in awe.

“do not fear” in this verse is al-tira'u. The same root reaches from fear to awe, depending on whom the fear is directed toward. Joseph answers their fear of him by refusing the place of ultimate power: he is not God.

ALSO GROWS

yir'ah: Fear, awe

יִרְאָה

This noun from the same root shows how fear can also be directed as awe toward God.

mora: Fear, dread

מוֹרָא

This branch keeps the force of fear visible; Joseph’s reassurance addresses real dread, not a harmless concern.

יוֹסֵף

Yosef

GROWS FROM

יסף

y-s-p

To add, continue, increase.

Joseph’s name carries the root of adding. Beside his refusal to occupy God’s place, it gives the moment a quiet edge: he does not add another wound through vengeance.

ALSO GROWS

yasaph: Add, increase, continue

יָסַף

This verb is the seed carried in Joseph’s name.

tosefet: Addition, increase

תּוֹסֶפֶת

This noun shares the root and makes the sense of adding concrete.

When wronged, a person can leave vengeance outside their own hands and refuse to occupy God’s place.

To me belongs vengeance, and repayment. At its appointed time their foot slips, for the day of their falling is near, and what is readied comes hurrying upon them.
Deuteronomy 32:35 · SDVVengeance belongs to God, marking the boundary Joseph names when he asks whether he stands in God’s place.
Let the LORD judge between me and you, and let the LORD avenge me of you, but my hand shall not be upon you.
1 Samuel 24:12 · SDVThe verse leaves judgment to the LORD while keeping the speaker’s own hand from the person who wronged him.
Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but give room to wrath. For it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will give back, says the LORD.
Romans 12:19 · SDVThe verse names the same boundary: vengeance belongs to God rather than the injured person’s own hand.
Now therefore, do not fear. I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spoke to their hearts.
Genesis 50:21 · SDV

The same Hebrew root for fear appears again, now followed by nourishment and kind speech. Joseph’s question in verse 19 becomes concrete: the brothers receive care from the one they feared.
