King James wording
King James Version
And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.THE KEY
The flood’s covering does not become the earth’s final state: as it recedes, the ground dries and emerges again.
THE MEANING
The earth is dry again; stable ground is returning where water once covered it. This verse speaks to the present difference between what is submerged and what is gone: what supports life can come back into view as the covering recedes.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that whatever has been overwhelmed is gone forever; the earth dries and appears again.
THE ROOT
יָבְשָׁה
yāvēšāh
GROWS FROM
יבש
y-b-sh
To be dry or become dry.
“the earth had dried” in this verse is yāvēšāh. The word for the earth becoming dry comes from the same root that names dry land itself. Hebrew lets the drying and the return of exposed ground resonate as one movement: the waters recede, and stable ground is available again.
ALSO GROWS
yāvēsh: Dry; dried up.
יַבֵּשׁ
This branch makes the verse’s drying part of a wider image of what was covered becoming exposed again.
yabbāshāh: Dry land.
יַבָּשָׁה
The same root names the ground that emerges when the waters no longer cover it, joining the earth’s drying with the return of habitable space.
THE PATTERN
Ground for life emerges when waters give way.
And God said, "Let the waters beneath the heavens be pooled into one place, and let the dry land be seen." And it was so.And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD made the sea go back by a strong breath of the east all that night, and made the sea dry ground, and the waters were split.By trust they stepped across the Red Sea as over dry land, which the Egyptians, making the attempt, were swallowed down.THE THREAD
And God said, "Let the waters beneath the heavens be pooled into one place, and let the dry land be seen." And it was so.“Dry land” in Genesis 1:9 is יַבָּשָׁה (yabbāshāh), from the same root, יבש (y-b-sh), as “dried” here. In creation the dry ground appears as waters gather; here it returns as the flood’s covering recedes.
