King James wording
King James Version
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.THE KEY
Shem means “name,” so the sentence binds divine belonging to identity while placing Canaan in service.
THE MEANING
You meet a verse where identity is relational: the LORD is named as Shem’s God, and Canaan is assigned to serve. Blessing and subordination stand in the same sentence, so favor does not erase the hierarchy the verse names.
THE ROOT
בָּרוּךְ
barukh
GROWS FROM
ברך
b-r-k
To bless; this word family also includes the word for knee.
“Blessed” in this verse is barukh. The root holds blessing and knee in one consonant family, connecting blessing with a posture of honor, not only a favorable outcome. Here the blessing directs that honor to the LORD.
ALSO GROWS
berakhah: Blessing
בְּרָכָה
This branch shows blessing as something spoken and given, as in the verse’s opening words.
berekh: Knee
בֶּרֶךְ
The shared consonants connect blessing with the posture of honoring the one who is blessed.
עֶבֶד
eved
GROWS FROM
עבד
ʿ-b-d
To work, labor, or serve.
The root keeps the work inside the status: a servant is one who serves through labor. In this verse, Canaan’s assigned position is expressed as an active relation of service, not only a title.
ALSO GROWS
ʿavad: To serve or work
עָבַד
This verb makes the action inside “servant” explicit: service involves doing work.
ʿavodah: Work or service
עֲבוֹדָה
This noun shows the wider field of labor and service contained in the root.
THE PATTERN
Scripture’s spoken blessings bind a named person or household to consequences that reach beyond them.
And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, and be a blessing. And in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have heard and responded to my voice."And the writing, seeing ahead that God would align the nations out of trust, announced the good message beforehand to Abraham, saying, In you all the nations will be blessed.THE THREAD
And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, and be a blessing.Genesis 12:2 uses the same blessing-root and places it beside a promise to make a name great. That pairing opens Shem’s name in this verse: blessing and identity appear together, while this line also shows the social order that follows.
