This verse in the King James

King James wording
God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

Japheth’s enlargement echoes his name and opens into Shem’s tents, while Canaan’s servitude shows that this widening does not free everyone.

Japheth is enlarged and dwells within Shem’s tents, so expansion here takes the form of residence among another household. At the same time, Canaan is assigned service; the verse holds welcome and hierarchy together. Its widening does not reach everyone as freedom.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The assumption that every widening brings freedom to everyone is undone here: Japheth receives enlargement and dwelling, while Canaan is still assigned service.

יַפְתְּ

yapht

GROWS FROM

פתה

p-t-h

Open; make wide or spacious. Other forms in this word family also carry senses such as enticing or persuading.

“widen” in this verse is yapht. The Hebrew pairs the verb for making wide, yapht, with the name Yefet (Japheth). The sound-link makes the blessing feel fitted to his name: his enlargement is an opening, not merely an increase in size.

ALSO GROWS

Japheth: The name echoed by the verb “make wide” in this line.

יֶפֶת

The wordplay ties the widening directly to Japheth’s name.

peti: A person who is inexperienced or open to persuasion.

פֶּתִי

This related form preserves the root’s sense of openness, while the verse’s context points specifically to making wide.

pittah: To persuade or draw someone in.

פִּתָּה

It shows another shade of the root’s opening language; this verse uses the sense of widening.

יִשְׁכֹּן

yishkon

GROWS FROM

שכן

sh-k-n

Settle, reside, dwell.

“settle” in this verse is yishkon. The word for dwelling shares its root with words for a dwelling place and a neighbor. Japheth’s place in Shem’s tents is therefore an image of residence within another household, not merely passing through.

ALSO GROWS

dwelling place: A place where someone dwells; a tabernacle.

מִשְׁכָּן

It carries the same root from the verb “dwell” into the place of dwelling.

neighbor: A person who lives nearby.

שָׁכֵן

The shared root links dwelling with living near others.

עֶבֶד

eved

GROWS FROM

עבד

ʿ-b-d

Work, serve.

The verse’s servant is named through the root of work and service. That connection keeps the hierarchy concrete: Canaan is assigned a serving position in the same line that enlarges Japheth and places him in Shem’s tents.

ALSO GROWS

avodah: Labor or service.

עֲבֹדָה

It makes explicit the work carried by the servant’s root.

worker: One who works or serves.

עֹבֵד

It keeps the verse’s servant language attached to a person assigned to serve.

Scriptural widening makes room across an existing boundary by drawing people into shared dwelling or inheritance.

Widen the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your dwellings stretch out. Do not hold back; lengthen your cords, and grip your pegs.
Isaiah 54:2 · SDVWidening is pictured as expanding a dwelling so it can hold more.
And I have other sheep, which are not of this fold. I must lead them also, and they shall hear and respond to my voice, and there shall be one flock, and one shepherd.
John 10:16 · SDVThose outside the first fold are brought into one shared flock.
That the nations would be joint heirs, of one body, and fellow sharers of his promise in Jesus the Anointed One through the good news.
Ephesians 3:6 · SDVPeople across a boundary become participants in the same inheritance.
And they said, Come, let us build us a city and a tower with its head in the heavens; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered across the face of the whole earth.
Genesis 11:4 · SDV

The Hebrew word ⁨שֵׁם⁩ (shem) means “name” and is also the name Shem in Genesis 9:27. At Babel, people seek to make their own name; here Japheth’s widening is placed inside Shem’s tents, shifting the image from self-made renown to dwelling within another’s named household.
