This verse in the King James

King James wording
Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:

The verse calls the governor, the priest, and the whole people to strength because the LORD is with them all.

You are addressed as part of a people whose work is not carried by one leader alone. The labor follows the repeated assurance, “I am with you,” making presence the ground of shared effort.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that the work depends on a few strong leaders dissolves here: the whole people receive the call, and the LORD is with them.

חֲזַק

ḥazaq

GROWS FROM

חזק

The root ḥ-z-q carries the sense of becoming strong, prevailing, and making firm.

“take hold” in this verse is ḥazaq. English can make “be strong” sound like an inner mood or reserve. This root also means to hold fast and to strengthen, so the call includes both firmness and strengthening; it reaches the leaders and all the people before the work begins.

ALSO GROWS

heḥĕzîq: To grasp or hold firmly.

הֶחֱזִיק

This branch reveals strength as the ability to stay firm, not merely a feeling of courage.

ḥizzēq: To make strong or reinforce.

חִזֵּק

The same root names the act of giving strength, illuminating how the repeated call gathers the whole community for the work.

Strength becomes shared capacity for work when it is grounded in God’s presence.

Hold fast and be firm. Do not fear, and do not quake before them. For the LORD your God is the one who walks with you. He will not release you, nor leave you.
Deuteronomy 31:6 · SDVStrength is joined to the assurance that the LORD goes with the people.
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the grip of his strength.
Ephesians 6:10 · SDVStrength is located in the Lord, echoing Haggai’s assurance of presence.
So then, my beloved brothers, be steady, unmoved, always overflowing in the work of the Lord, seeing that your toil is not empty in the Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:58 · SDVSteadfast work is held together with life and labor in the Lord.
Thus says the LORD of hosts. Let your hands take hold, you who hear and respond to these words in these days, spoken by the mouth of the prophets in the day the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, so that the temple might be built.
Zechariah 8:9 · SDV

The same Hebrew root ⁨חזק⁩ (ḥ-z-q, “be strong” or “strengthen”) appears in both verses. Haggai calls the whole people to be strong and work; Zechariah directs that strength to their hands as they build.
