This verse in the King James

King James wording
For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

The Hebrew says the LORD is the one causing the whole created world to tremble, down to its waters and dry ground.

The LORD of hosts declares a shaking that reaches the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the dry land, the whole field of what seems stable. The verse speaks to you now through that total scope: no layer of your world is beyond the reach of this shaking.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

What feels solid is not necessarily permanent or beyond being shaken.

מַרְעִישׁ

mar'ish

GROWS FROM

ר־ע־שׁ

r-ʿ-sh

To quake, tremble, or roar; in this verb form, to cause something to quake.

“shake” in this verse is mar'ish. The verb carries the root ⁨רעש⁩, the movement of a quake, and its causative form makes the LORD the one producing the trembling. The same root can name both an earthquake and the shaking of everything caught in it, giving this verse the force of a disturbance that reaches the whole created field.

ALSO GROWS

ra'ash: Earthquake, shaking, or tumult.

רַעַשׁ

In 1 Kings 19:11, the word names the earthquake; the branch shows that the root can name the upheaval itself, not only the act of shaking.

vera'ashu: And they shall shake.

וְרָעֲשׁוּ

In Ezekiel 38:20, the sea creatures, birds, beasts, and people shake before the upheaval, showing the root’s reach across the living world.

When the LORD shakes what appears fixed, what can be removed gives way and what cannot be shaken remains.

Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken loose from its place, in the heat of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of the burning of his anger.
Isaiah 13:13 · SDVThe shaking reaches both heaven and earth, and the earth itself moves from its place.
whose voice then shook the earth, but now he has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens.”
Hebrews 12:26 · SDVThe promise names a shaking that extends beyond the earth to heaven as well.
And this, “Yet once more,” shows the setting elsewhere of what is shaken, as of what has been made, so that what is not shaken may remain.
Hebrews 12:27 · SDVThe shaking removes what is removable, leaving what cannot be shaken to remain.
And this, “Yet once more,” shows the setting elsewhere of what is shaken, as of what has been made, so that what is not shaken may remain.
Hebrews 12:27 · SDV

This verse names what the shaking does: what is made and removable gives way, while what cannot be shaken remains. Haggai’s list of heavens, earth, sea, and dry land shows the scope of the shaking; Hebrews reveals the distinction it brings into view.
