What Does Hebrews 10:1 Mean?

For the instruction holds a shadow of the good things about to come, and not the very image of the things done. With the same slain offerings they bring near year by year without break, it can never make complete those who draw near.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

The verse’s fault line is between pointing toward the goal and actually bringing the one who approaches to it.

A shadow gives you an outline of coming good, but it is not the full image of what it points toward. Yearly sacrifices cannot bring the one drawing near to completion. Nearness to a sign is not the same as arriving at the reality it signals.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that repetition itself can finish what the shadow only points toward.

τελειῶσαι

teleiōsai

GROWS FROM

⁨τελ-⁩ (tel-), from ⁨τέλος⁩ (telos)

End, goal, completion; bringing something to its intended end.

“make complete” in this verse is teleiōsai. Here, “perfect” carries the sense of reaching completion, not moral flawlessness. The verse says yearly sacrifice cannot carry the person drawing near all the way to the goal.

ALSO GROWS

telos: End, goal, outcome

τέλος

This related word makes clear that completion is arrival at an end or goal.

teleios: Complete, mature

τέλειος

It shows the same word family describing a state of having reached completion.

teleiōsis: Completion, bringing to an end

τελείωσις

This noun names the process or result that the yearly sacrifices cannot achieve here.

τοὺς προσερχομένους

tous proserchomenous

GROWS FROM

⁨ἔρχομαι⁩ (erchomai, come or go) + ⁨πρός⁩ (pros, toward)

Coming toward; approaching.

“bring near” in this verse is tous proserchomenous. The verse describes people still drawing near; it does not call them distant or insincere. Its claim is that repeated sacrifice cannot bring approaching people to completion.

ALSO GROWS

erchomai: Come, go

ἔρχομαι

The compound keeps the sense of movement toward something.

eiserchomai: Enter

εἰσέρχομαι

This compound uses the same verb for coming to describe movement inward.

exerchomai: Go out, come out

ἐξέρχομαι

This compound uses the same verb for movement outward, showing how the shared root carries the idea of coming or going.

σκιά

skiá

GROWS FROM

σκια-

skia-

Shadow, shade.

A shadow is a real outline with a source, but it is not the full form of what casts it. The verse places yearly sacrifices on the side of the pointer, not the completion they point toward.

ALSO GROWS

skiazō: Cast a shadow

σκιάζω

The same shadow-root names the action that produces the outline.

episkiazō: Overshadow

ἐπισκιάζω

This compound keeps the shadow-root while describing its falling over something.

A pattern can reveal a reality’s outline, while only the reality itself brings completion.

And see that you make them according to their form, which was shown to you on the mountain.
Exodus 25:40 · SDVThe revealed pattern gives a form to follow, showing that what is seen can correspond to a pattern beyond itself.
which are a shadow of what is about to come, but the body is of the Anointed One.
Colossians 2:17 · SDVThis verse names the same distinction between a shadow that points ahead and the body it represents.
For by one offering he has made complete without break those being set apart.
Hebrews 10:14 · SDVThe one offering brings completion where the yearly repetition in Hebrews 10:1 cannot.
For by one offering he has made complete without break those being set apart.
Hebrews 10:14 · SDV

The word translated “perfected” is ⁨τετελείωκεν⁩ (teteleiōken, has brought to completion), from the same root as “make … perfect” here. Hebrews 10:1 names what yearly sacrifices cannot accomplish; Hebrews 10:14 names the one offering that does.
