This verse in the King James

King James wording
And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

The rebuke is named as part of being raised as a child, placing its sting inside a relationship rather than outside it.

This address reaches you now as a child of the Lord: correction is held inside the language of relationship. The verse names two ways of meeting it, treating it as nothing or losing heart under it, while still calling you “My son.” It makes room for the sting of rebuke without making rebuke proof of abandonment.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that correction means rejection is unsettled here: the address calls you “My son” and places the rebuke within the Lord’s care for a child.

παιδεία

paideia

GROWS FROM

παιδ-

Child; by extension, the raising, instruction, and discipline of a child.

“training” in this verse is paideia. The word translated “chastening” belongs to the same Greek family as “child” and “train.” It lets correction be heard as formative care within a parent-child bond, while the verse still names it as rebuke and does not erase its sting.

ALSO GROWS

pais: A child or young person.

παῖς

This is the family’s seed idea: the correction is addressed to someone named as a child.

paideuō: To bring up, instruct, train, or discipline.

παιδεύω

It makes the formative work of chastening visible beneath the English word.

paidagōgos: A guardian or instructor who accompanies and guides a child.

παιδαγωγός

This branch keeps the emphasis on care and formation as a child is guided.

Correction is presented as a form of care within a parent-child relationship.

And you shall perceive in your heart, that as a man straightens his son, so the LORD your God straightens you.
Deuteronomy 8:5 · SDVThe verse directly frames the LORD’s chastening through the relationship between a parent and child.
For the LORD reproves the one he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
Proverbs 3:12 · SDVCorrection appears alongside love and delight, as part of a father’s bond with a child.
Those whom I love, I expose and train. Be boiling, therefore, and turn.
Revelation 3:19 · SDVRebuke and chastening are spoken within the declaration of love.
For whom the LORD loves, he trains, and he whips every son he takes to his side.
Hebrews 12:6 · SDV

The word translated “chasteneth” comes from the same Greek word family as “chastening” in this verse. The next verse makes the family bond explicit: the one who corrects is also the one who loves and receives the son.
