King James wording
King James Version
Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.THE KEY
The heart’s wandering does not merely take you off the way; it makes the way unrecognizable.
THE MEANING
When your heart keeps wandering, God’s way can remain before you and still go unrecognized. Here, knowing means recognition through encounter, so the loss is deeper than missing a direction on a map. The grief is over this inward distance, not one mistaken step.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that knowing the right words is the same as knowing the way: a wandering heart can leave the route unrecognized.
THE ROOT
πλανῶνται
planōntai
GROWS FROM
πλαν-
To wander, stray, or be led off course.
“wander” in this verse is planōntai. The Greek verb describes ongoing wandering, not a single wrong turn. The Hebrew wording behind this line uses תֹּעֵי (toʿei, wandering astray), likewise joining the heart’s drift to a loss of direction.
ALSO GROWS
planē: Wandering, error, or delusion.
πλάνη
The word family shows how being off course can become a distorted sense of what is true.
planos: One who wanders or leads another astray.
πλάνος
The drift can shape not only a direction but also the one who travels it or draws others along.
ἔγνωσαν
egnōsan
GROWS FROM
γνω-/γινω-
To know or recognize, with the sense of knowing through encounter.
“known” in this verse is egnōsan. The verse says the people have not recognized God’s ways through encounter. The Hebrew parallel, יָדַע (yādaʿ, know or perceive), carries the same depth: the lost knowing is relational, not merely a lack of information.
ALSO GROWS
gnōsis: Knowledge or recognition.
γνῶσις
This branch shows the word family’s reach from knowing to what is known.
epiginōskō: To recognize or come to know.
ἐπιγινώσκω
Recognition makes clear why the verse describes more than failing to recall directions.
καρδίᾳ
kardia
GROWS FROM
καρδ-
The inner center of thought, desire, and direction.
The heart is the inner center from which direction is lived, not only a place of feeling. When it wanders, the way can be present and still not be discerned from within.
ALSO GROWS
sklērokardia: Hardness or resistance of the heart.
σκληροκαρδία
This compound shows how the heart’s condition can shape whether a person receives a way.
kardiognōstēs: One who knows the heart.
καρδιογνώστης
The compound joins the heart with knowing, echoing the verse’s link between inner direction and recognition.
THE PATTERN
When the heart wanders from the way, the way becomes difficult to recognize.
Forty years long I was sickened by this generation, and said, They are a people who wander in their heart, and they have not perceived my ways. All of us like sheep have wandered; each has turned to his own way, and the LORD has caused the crookedness of us all to fall upon him.Because, having known God, they did not give him weight as God, nor did they give thanks; but they were made empty in their reckonings, and their unjoined heart was darkened.THE THREAD
I am the good shepherd. I perceive my own, and my own perceive me.Hebrews uses ἔγνωσαν (egnōsan, knew or perceived) from γινώσκω (ginōskō, know through encounter). John uses the same word for the mutual knowing of shepherd and sheep, showing that knowing the way is a matter of recognition within relationship.
