This verse in the King James

King James wording
For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

The Lord’s rise from Judah turns Moses’ silence about that tribe’s priesthood into the doorway for a different priestly order.

The verse sets two facts beside one another: the Lord rises from Judah, and Moses says nothing about priesthood from that tribe. His priesthood rests on a different order than tribal authorization; the following lines name that order through the oath concerning Melchizedek.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that Moses’ silence about Judah’s priesthood makes the Lord’s priesthood impossible; the verse names his Judahite rise, and the next lines show its different basis.

ἀνατέταλκεν

anatétalken

GROWS FROM

τέλλω

⁨τέλλω⁩ (tellō): to rise or come forth.

The Greek perfect presents the Lord’s rise as accomplished and still consequential. This word family also names the rising sun and sunrise, so “sprang” carries an image of emergence into view; Moses’ silence shows that this rise does not come through a priestly line he names.

ALSO GROWS

anatolē: rising; sunrise; east

ἀνατολή

This noun from the same rising family names the sunrise, making the verse’s language of the Lord’s emergence more vivid.

epitellō: to rise or come up

ἐπιτέλλω

This compound preserves the ⁨τέλλω⁩ stem and its sense of rising, reinforcing that the Lord comes forth from Judah.

A ruler rises from Judah while priesthood rests on a separate, divinely sworn order.

The rod shall not turn aside from Judah, nor the lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to him shall be the assembly of the peoples.
Genesis 49:10 · SDVJudah is named as the line from which the ruler emerges.
The LORD swears and will not relent. You are a priest for the ages, according to my word, Melchizedek.
Psalm 110:4 · SDVPriesthood is established by the LORD’s oath and the order of Melchizedek.
For it is witnessed, You are a priest for the ages according to the arrangement of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 7:17 · SDVThe verse identifies the sworn Melchizedek order as the basis for this priesthood.
The LORD swears and will not relent. You are a priest for the ages, according to my word, Melchizedek.
Psalm 110:4 · SDV

Hebrews says Moses names no priesthood for Judah; this psalm supplies the other basis, an oath appointing a priest after Melchizedek’s order. Moses’ silence is the hinge that turns the passage toward that order.
