King James wording
King James Version
And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:THE KEY
The succession of priests is not proof that one priest’s service endures; it is the mark death leaves on every bearer.
THE MEANING
Death sets a limit on each priest’s tenure, so another takes the place when one can no longer remain. The office continues across persons, while no mortal bearer continues in it without end.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that many priests mean one person’s service has continued unbroken: the verse says their number comes from death interrupting each one.
THE ROOT
παραμένειν
parameinein
GROWS FROM
μένω
menō
To remain, stay, or abide.
The Greek word for “continue” belongs to the family of “remain” and “abide.” Here, death blocks that remaining, making the many priests evidence of interrupted tenure and succession.
ALSO GROWS
menō: Remain, abide.
μένω
This is the base verb in “continue”; the verse turns on whether a priest can remain in service.
monē: Dwelling place, abode.
μονή
This related word names a place to remain, extending the root’s sense from continuing in a role to having a place of abiding.
THE PATTERN
When death ends a mortal bearer’s tenure, continuity passes through succession.
And strip Aaron of his garments, and clothe Eleazar his son with them; and Aaron shall be gathered to his people, and shall die there. One generation walks away, and another generation comes, but the earth stands for ages.Moses, my servant, is dead. So now rise, cross over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the children of Israel.THE THREAD
But this one, because he remains for the ages, holds a priesthood that does not step across to another. The same Greek verb family for remaining appears in both verses: death prevents the many priests from continuing, while this one continues ever. The shift in the bearer turns succession into an unchangeable priesthood.
