King James wording
King James Version
A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.THE KEY
Sacred presence is not a human project: the one who serves the dwelling did not establish it.
THE MEANING
The minister serves in the set-apart place within a genuine dwelling the Lord establishes. Its source is God’s own act, so human service takes place within a presence it did not create.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that people must build or earn a place for God to dwell gives way here: the dwelling begins with the Lord’s own act.
THE ROOT
σκηνῆς
skēnēs
GROWS FROM
σκην-
skēn-
tent, shelter, dwelling
English presents “tabernacle” as a specialized sacred term; σκηνή (skēnē) retains the concrete image of a tent or dwelling. Its word-family also appears in the New Testament verb for dwelling among people, making divine presence feel near and inhabitable.
ALSO GROWS
skēnoō: to dwell, pitch a tent
σκηνόω
John uses this same word-family for the Word dwelling among people, turning the tabernacle image into an act of presence.
skēnopoios: tentmaker
σκηνοποιός
This branch preserves the ordinary tent at the center of the sacred word, keeping the dwelling materially imaginable.
THE PATTERN
God establishes the dwelling and brings divine presence among people.
And let them make me a set-apart place, that I may pitch my tent among them.Yet the Highest does not settle in what is made by hands, as the prophet says. And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth.THE THREAD
And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth.John’s “dwelt” translates σκηνόω (skēnoō), to dwell or pitch a tent, from the same σκην- (skēn-) word-family as “tabernacle” in Hebrews 8:2. The connection turns the tent into an action: God’s dwelling takes up residence among people.
