King James wording
King James Version
Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;THE KEY
The verse separates the high priest’s recurring ritual with another’s blood from a self-offering that does not recur.
THE MEANING
Two rhythms stand together in the verse: the high priest enters year after year with another’s blood, while offering himself does not belong to that repeated cycle. The contrast speaks now as a distinction between a recurring rite and a self-giving that is not renewed by repetition.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that his self-offering must be repeated each year to keep its force; it places that offering outside the high priest’s annual cycle.
THE ROOT
προσφέρῃ
prospherē
GROWS FROM
φέρω
pherō
To carry, bring, or bear.
English “offer” can sound like a static act at an altar, but προσφέρω is built on φέρω, to carry or bring, with προσ- meaning toward. Hebrews 9:28 uses this same carrying family for both “offered” and “bear,” joining the self-offering with the bearing of many people’s sins.
ALSO GROWS
pherō: Carry, bring, bear.
φέρω
The base verb gives “offer” a sense of movement: something is carried toward.
anapherō: Carry up, bear.
ἀναφέρω
Hebrews 9:28 uses this related verb for “bear the sins of many,” linking the offering to the bearing.
prosphora: Offering, presentation.
προσφορά
This noun from the same word family names what is brought forward.
THE PATTERN
Scripture places recurring ritual cycles beside a completed act that does not need to recur.
This is a statute for the ages for you, for covering the children of Israel for all their shortcomings once a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses. When Jesus had taken the sour wine, he said, It is finished. And he bowed his head, and handed over his breath. But this one, after bringing near one slain offering for shortcomings, sat down without break at the right hand of God.THE THREAD
So also the Anointed One, once brought near to carry the falling short of many, shall be perceived a second time, without falling short, by those who stretch out to receive him, into deliverance. The verb translated “offered” repeats the same Greek carrying word traced above, and “bear” comes from its cognate: both grow from the idea of carrying. The sentence joins the act of offering with the bearing of many people’s sins, then marks it “once.”
