This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then said God, Call his name Lo-ammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.

Lo-ammi (⁨לֹא עַמִּי⁩, lo-ammi, “not my people”) turns covenant rupture into a name, while “I will not be your God” negates the verb of being itself.

This verse names estrangement in its starkest form: “you are not my people, and I will not be your God.” Belonging and presence withdraw together; the line leaves no shelter in a religious label. The name Lo-ammi (⁨לֹא עַמִּי⁩, lo-ammi, “not my people”) makes that rupture visible and speakable.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that a sacred label alone guarantees belonging: the relationship itself is explicitly denied.

אֶהְיֶה

GROWS FROM

היה

Be, become, happen.

The Hebrew verb ⁨הָיָה⁩ (hayah, “to be, become”) makes the break a negation of God’s being-for them. Leviticus 26:12 uses forms of this same root in the reciprocal promise, “I will be your God” and “ye shall be my people”; here that covenant shape is reversed.

ALSO GROWS

vehayiti: And I will be.

וְהָיִיתִי

Leviticus 26:12 uses this form in the promise, “I will be your God.”

tihyu: You will be.

תִּהְיוּ

Leviticus 26:12 uses this form in the corresponding promise, “ye shall be my people.”

Names make belonging visible, and a changed or received name marks the relation they announce.

And I will sow her for myself in the earth. I will have compassion on the one who had not received compassion, and I will say to those who were not my people, You are my people, and they will say, You are my God.
Hosea 2:23 · SDVThe rejected designation gives way to a direct declaration of mutual belonging.
You shall no more be called Left Behind, and your land shall no more be called Stunned; but you shall be called Hephzibah, my delight is in her, and your land Beulah, wedded; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be wed.
Isaiah 62:4 · SDVForsaken and Desolate give way to names that announce renewed delight and marriage.
The one who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will by no means go out again. I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of the heavens from my God, and I will write upon him my new name.
Revelation 3:12 · SDVThe names written on the person make divine and communal belonging part of the promised identity.
And I will sow her for myself in the earth. I will have compassion on the one who had not received compassion, and I will say to those who were not my people, You are my people, and they will say, You are my God.
Hosea 2:23 · SDV

⁨עַמִּי⁩ (ʿammi, “my people”) appears again in Hosea 2:23, with ⁨לֹא⁩ (lo, “not”) removed. The phrase that marks rupture here becomes a declaration of restored belonging there, revealing the precise hinge inside Lo-ammi.
