King James wording
King James Version
And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.THE KEY
The same prophetic voice is the way out of constriction and the watch that keeps Israel once it is out.
THE MEANING
The LORD is bringing you up out of what constricts you through a voice that also keeps watch over your passage. Being brought out and being preserved belong to one movement; deliverance continues as protection on the way toward wholeness.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that freedom means being left to fend for yourself once the exit is open.
THE ROOT
נִשְׁמָר
nishmar
GROWS FROM
שָׁמַר
shamar
Guard, watch over, keep.
“guarded” in this verse is nishmar. The KJV’s “preserved” carries the sense of being kept under watch. Because the same prophet is named as the means for both the coming out and the keeping, deliverance continues as care after the exit.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: Keeper, guard, watchman.
שֹׁמֵר
The same family names the one who watches, so being preserved here is being held under continuing watch.
mishmeret: Guard, charge, watch.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
This branch shows keeping as an ongoing watch or charge, not just a moment of rescue.
הֶעֱלָה
he'elah
GROWS FROM
עָלָה
alah
Go up, ascend.
“brought up” in this verse is he'elah. Though the KJV says “brought out,” the Hebrew verb makes Israel go up from Egypt. Mitzrayim (מִצְרַיִם, Mitzrayim, the two narrows) frames that motion as ascent out of constriction.
ALSO GROWS
alah: Go up, ascend.
עָלָה
This is the basic movement carried by the verb: the LORD brings Israel upward from Egypt.
aliyah: Ascent, going up.
עֲלִיָּה
This branch makes the upward direction visible: leaving constriction is also rising into a wider way.
נָבִיא
navi
GROWS FROM
נבא
n-b-ʾ
Speak or proclaim prophetically.
The word identifies a speaker whose message mediates movement: the verse places the prophet beside both the LORD’s act of bringing out and the continued keeping. The repeated phrase makes this voice part of deliverance’s structure, not a detached announcement.
ALSO GROWS
nibba: To prophesy, speak prophetically.
נִבָּא
The verb shows the prophet as one who speaks; the verse presents that speaking as part of how the LORD moves and keeps a people.
nevu'ah: Prophecy, prophetic utterance.
נְבוּאָה
This branch names the spoken message through which the prophet’s role takes shape.
THE PATTERN
The LORD’s deliverance moves through a sent voice that opens an exit and makes a way forward.
Now go, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. The LORD your God raises up for you a prophet from your midst, from your brothers, like me. To him you hear and respond. This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who set you as ruler and judge? This one God sent as ruler and releaser, by the hand of the messenger who was seen by him in the bramble.THE THREAD
The LORD watches over your going out and your coming in, from now and to the ages.Hosea’s נִשְׁמָר (nishmar, was kept under watch) and Psalm’s verb rendered “preserve” come from שָׁמַר (shamar, guard or watch over). Psalm names both the going out and the coming in, opening Hosea’s keeping into protection across the whole passage.
