This verse in the King James

King James wording
And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

The valley named Trouble becomes a doorway of hope, and hope is also the Hebrew word for a cord stretched across an opening.

The place in you marked by trouble is not sealed as trouble forever; it can become an opening into expectation. The vineyards and returning song show life and voice reappearing where loss had defined the landscape. The departure from Egypt gives this renewal the shape of release from constriction into spaciousness.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that a trouble-marked place can only produce more trouble dissolves here: it can become an entrance to renewal.

תִּקְוָה

tiqvah

GROWS FROM

קוה

q-w-h

Wait for, look toward, hope expectantly.

The word translated “hope” also names a cord or line; expectancy takes a tangible shape, stretched across a threshold. The valley does not cease to be trouble, but it becomes an opening where expectation can take hold.

ALSO GROWS

qavah: To wait for, look eagerly toward.

קָוָה

The verb makes hope an expectation directed toward what is still coming.

tiqvah: Hope, expectation; also a cord or line.

תִּקְוָה

The same noun names Rahab’s scarlet line in Joshua 2:18, giving hope the image of a line held at an opening.

עָכוֹר

ʿākhōr

GROWS FROM

עכר

ʿ-k-r

To trouble, disturb, or bring turmoil.

The place name carries the disturbance in its sound: Achor is the trouble-marked valley. Hosea leaves that trouble legible while changing its role, it becomes a doorway to expectation.

ALSO GROWS

ʿakar: To trouble or disturb.

עָכַר

This verb names the force carried in the valley’s name.

ʿokher: One who troubles; a troubler.

עֹכֵר

The same root can name the one who brings disturbance, making clear that Achor means more than a neutral location.

וְעָנְתָה

veʿāntāh

GROWS FROM

ענה

ʿ-n-h

To answer or respond; in this form, to sing or respond aloud.

“answer” in this verse is veʿāntāh. The Hebrew verb behind “sing” also carries the sense of answering or responding. Her song is pictured as a reply rising in the very place where hope opens.

ALSO GROWS

ʿanah: To answer or respond.

עָנָה

The root makes the returning song sound like an answer, not simply a melody.

maʿaneh: An answer or reply.

מַעֲנֶה

This noun from the same root holds the idea of a response, echoing the voice restored in the valley.

A place marked by pain can become a threshold where fruit, rest, and song return.

You overturned the beating of my breast into a dance. You untied my sackcloth and girded me with gladness.
Psalm 30:11 · SDVMourning does not have the final word; it becomes the ground from which gladness emerges.
Sharon will be a pasture of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place where herds lie down, for my people who sought me.
Isaiah 65:10 · SDVThe same trouble-named valley becomes a place of rest.
Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice; you will be pained, but your pain will become joy.
John 16:20 · SDVSorrow is turned into joy, showing pain giving way to a changed response.
Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you lowered us. And you shall gather to yourself, into your house, your father, and your mother, and your brothers, and all your father's household.
Joshua 2:18 · SDV

Joshua uses the same Hebrew noun, ⁨תִּקְוָה⁩ (tiqvah, hope or cord), for Rahab’s scarlet line that Hosea uses for hope. The shared word makes the opening tangible: hope appears as a line held at a threshold, marking passage through danger.
