King James wording
King James Version
They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them.THE KEY
Flocks and herds cannot close the divide: what makes the search fail is that the LORD has withdrawn from them.
THE MEANING
The verse shows the reader a search surrounded by abundance: people come with flocks and herds to seek the LORD, yet do not find him because he has withdrawn from them. The failure is not a lack of things to bring; the relationship itself stands divided. The verse speaks now wherever outward effort and apparent nearness coexist with distance.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that the right offerings, or enough religious effort, guarantee access to God. Abundance accompanies the search here, but it does not close the separation.
THE ROOT
חָלַק
ḥālaq
GROWS FROM
חלק
ḥ-l-q
To divide, apportion, or separate
The verb rendered “withdrawn” carries the root’s picture of division: the verse describes more than a search that comes up empty; it names a separation between the LORD and them. The word family also speaks of portions and divisions, giving the absence the shape of something parted.
ALSO GROWS
ḥēleq: A portion or share
חֵלֶק
A share is something divided out; this branch gives the withdrawal a sense of separation rather than mere distance.
maḥălōqet: A division or section
מַחֲלֹקֶת
The same root names division into distinct parts, echoing the separation in “from them.”
לְבַקֵּשׁ
levaqqesh
GROWS FROM
בקשׁ
b-q-sh
To seek, request, or pursue
“seek” in this verse is levaqqesh. This root spans both the one who seeks and what is sought or desired, placing desire inside the movement of seeking. Yet the verse keeps seeking distinct from finding: the effort is present, while the separation remains.
ALSO GROWS
mevaqqesh: One who seeks
מְבַקֵּשׁ
The active form makes seeking a posture carried by a seeker, not simply a journey made with possessions.
mevuqqash: Sought after or desired
מְבֻקָּשׁ
This form brings desire into the root’s range, while the verse shows that desire and effort alone do not ensure encounter.
THE PATTERN
Scripture locates finding in the heart’s relation to God, while offerings and outward effort cannot substitute for that relation.
For I delight in faithful love and not slaughter, and the knowledge of God more than the ascending offerings. And you will seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the living soul, and with all the strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is more than all the whole-burned offerings and sacrifices.THE THREAD
Seek the LORD and his strength; search for his face continually.Psalm’s second verb, בַּקְּשׁוּ (baqqĕshū, “seek”), shares the root ב־ק־שׁ (b-q-sh, “seek or request”) with Hosea’s לְבַקֵּשׁ (levaqqesh, “to seek”). Hosea’s search comes with flocks and herds yet meets separation; the psalm turns that same seeking toward the LORD’s face and strength.
