King James wording
King James Version
When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard.THE KEY
Their going does not outrun the consequence: the net meets them in motion, and the birds’ flight becomes a descent the assembly has already heard.
THE MEANING
Movement does not guarantee escape: as they go, the net spreads over them and the birds are brought down. The chastisement is forceful and already heard by the congregation, so the capture arrives within a warning they know.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that staying in motion is enough to leave judgment behind.
THE ROOT
אֶפְרֹשׂ
ʾeprōś
GROWS FROM
פרשׂ
stretch out, spread over
The same verb describes a cloud spread as covering and hands stretched toward God, yet here its object is a net. The root holds the extension together; what is spread determines whether it covers or captures.
ALSO GROWS
paras: Spread a cloud as a covering.
פָּרַשׂ
The same spreading can cover and shelter; Hosea’s net turns that extension into capture.
paras: Spread hands toward the LORD.
פָּרַשׂ
The root describes arms extended outward as well as a net laid over its target.
אֲיַסְּרֵם
ʾayasserēm
GROWS FROM
יסר
discipline, correct, chastise
“straighten” in this verse is ʾayasserēm. The root carries both punitive discipline and correction or instruction. That kinship does not soften the verse’s force: here correction arrives through capture and the image of a forced descent.
ALSO GROWS
hivvasru: Receive correction or discipline.
הִוָּסְרוּ
The same root can name correction addressed to those who are warned.
musar: Correction that teaches or disciplines.
מוּסָר
This noun keeps instruction and chastisement within the same root family.
שֵׁמַע
shēmaʿ
GROWS FROM
שמע
hear, listen, attend; respond where the context calls for it
“has heard” in this verse is shēmaʿ. The Hebrew noun means hearing or report, from the root that can also carry listening and response. The verse joins what the assembly hears to what it encounters: the capture is described in relation to a report already before them.
ALSO GROWS
shamaʿ: Hear, attend, and respond where the context implies a response.
שָׁמַע
The root makes hearing more than the bare receipt of sound when response is in view.
shemuʿah: A report that is heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
This noun shows how hearing can name the report itself, as it does in Hosea’s reference to the assembly.
THE PATTERN
When judgment closes in, Scripture pictures apparent freedom of movement becoming a path into capture.
The nations sink into the pit they made; in the net they hid, their own foot is caught.I will spread my net over him, and he shall be caught in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon, to the land of the Chaldeans, yet he shall not see it. And there he shall die.For like a snare it will come in upon all who sit upon the face of the whole earth.THE THREAD
I will spread my net over him, and he shall be caught in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon, to the land of the Chaldeans, yet he shall not see it. And there he shall die.Ezekiel uses the same root פרשׂ (paras, “spread out”) for laying a net over its target, then says that target is caught. The shared root opens Hosea’s image further: what spreads over the one in motion is an actual net, extended to capture.
