This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.

The Hebrew word for “thickets” names interwoven growth, so the iron cuts through a tangle that can entrap, not simply a cluster of trees.

The verse speaks now of tangled growth being cut through and even Lebanon falling at the hand of a mighty one. Its scale and height do not make it permanent.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that whatever is dense, elevated, or imposing has become untouchable.

סִבְכֵי

sivkhei

GROWS FROM

סבך

To interweave or become entangled.

The word carries the sense of growth knotted together. English “thickets” can sound like mere density; the root also reveals how such growth can catch and hold.

ALSO GROWS

sevaḵ: Thicket; tangled growth.

סְבַךְ

Genesis 22:13 uses this word for the thicket in which the ram is caught by its horns.

sivkhei: Thickets; interwoven growth.

סִבְכֵי

Isaiah 9:18 uses the same form in “the thickets of the forest,” where the tangled growth catches fire.

לְבָנוֹן

Levanon

GROWS FROM

לבן

To be white or become white.

Lebanon’s name is commonly connected with whiteness, recalling its pale heights and snow. The verse says even this striking, towering presence falls.

ALSO GROWS

lavan: White.

לָבָן

This shares the root behind Lebanon’s name and gives the mountain’s name a quality of its own.

levanah: The moon; the white one.

לְבָנָה

The same root gives whiteness a luminous form, echoing the bright height associated with Lebanon.

Imposing growth and power remain subject to being brought down by a greater force.

Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts will sever the bough with terror; and the tall of stature will be cut down, and the high will be brought low.
Isaiah 10:33 · SDVThe lofty boughs and the haughty are brought low just before the forest of this verse falls.
And already the axe lies at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut out and thrown into the fire.
Matthew 3:10 · SDVThe axe reaches the trees at their root, showing that even established growth can be cut down.
He has pulled the mighty down from their seats, and lifted up the low.
Luke 1:52 · SDVThe mighty lose their high place, echoing Lebanon’s fall.
And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and look, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and raised him up as a rising offering in place of his son.
Genesis 22:13 · SDV

Isaiah’s “thickets” and Genesis’s “thicket” share the root ⁨סבך⁩ (s-b-k), interwoven growth. In Genesis the tangle catches the ram; here the iron cuts through the forest’s tangle, linking what can entrap with what can be cut through.
