King James wording
King James Version
And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.THE KEY
The Hebrew distinguishes the people driven away from those spread apart, then gives both a gathering movement.
THE MEANING
A signal rises before the nations, and the people driven out or scattered are gathered from every edge. The verse speaks to your displaced places now: being pushed away or spread apart does not put you beyond reach. Israel (יִשְׂרָאֵל, Yisra’el, “one who strives with God”) and Judah (יְהוּדָה, Yehudah, “praised”) remain named in the very act of dispersion.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being cast out or scattered means being permanently unreachable.
THE ROOT
נִדְחֵי
nidḥê
GROWS FROM
נדח
n-d-ḥ
To drive or thrust away; to banish.
“driven ones” in this verse is nidḥê. “Outcasts” is not just a location; its root describes people driven or thrust away. The gathering in this verse addresses that movement directly: the ones pushed out are the ones being gathered.
ALSO GROWS
niddāḥ: One driven away; an outcast.
נִדָּח
Names the person in the state of displacement that the verse reverses.
hiddīaḥ: To drive away or lead astray.
הִדִּיחַ
Carries the root’s force of being moved away from one’s place or path.
נְפֻצוֹת
nefuṣōt
GROWS FROM
פוץ
p-w-ts
To scatter, disperse, or spread apart.
“scattered” in this verse is nefuṣōt. “Dispersed” carries the motion of scattering across space, not an identity the people have chosen. Set beside the verb for gathering, it makes the verse’s movement visible: those spread apart can be collected.
ALSO GROWS
hēfīṣ: To spread abroad or scatter.
הֵפִיץ
Carries the same root into the act of spreading something outward.
təfūṣāh: Dispersion or distribution.
תְּפוּצָה
Names the condition created when something is spread out.
יְקַבֵּץ
yəqabbēṣ
GROWS FROM
קבץ
q-b-ts
To gather or collect.
“gather” in this verse is yəqabbēṣ. The root makes the action concrete: people are collected from across the earth. This verb stands beside a separate verb for assembling the outcasts, giving both forms of displacement an active answer.
ALSO GROWS
qibbēṣ: Gathered or collected.
קִבֵּץ
Shows the same root as an act that brings separated things together.
qibbūṣ: A gathering, collection, or group.
קִבּוּץ
Names what the root’s gathering action forms.
THE PATTERN
The divine movement in these verses runs toward the scattered and outcast, gathering them into belonging.
Hear and respond to the word of the LORD, O nations, and declare it in the far islands, and say, The one who scattered Israel will gather him and guard him, as a shepherd tends his flock. The LORD builds Jerusalem; he gathers the driven-out of Israel. And not for that nation only, but that he would also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.THE THREAD
The Lord GOD, who gathers the driven ones of Israel, says, Yet I will gather others to him, beside those already gathered to him.Isaiah 56:8 repeats נִדְחֵי (nidḥê, “outcasts,” those driven away), the same word from this verse, and places it beside a verb for gathering. The repeated root shows that the people marked by displacement remain exactly the people being gathered.
