This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts.

Mitzrayim carries the image of constriction, and this verse makes that narrowing political: Egypt is handed into the hard grip of rule.

The verse presents the LORD handing Egypt to a cruel ruler, then names the fierce king who rules over them. The danger is concrete: people are placed in a ruler’s hand, and that power bears down on them.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the assumption that being ruled means being protected: here, the ruler’s hand is the danger.

קָשֶׁה

qasheh

GROWS FROM

קשה

q-sh-h

To be hard, severe, or difficult.

The word translated “cruel” belongs to the language of hardness: the same root can describe a severe condition or an unyielding quality. Political cruelty becomes imposed hardness, the ruler makes life hard for those in his hand.

ALSO GROWS

qashah: To be hard or severe.

קָשָׁה

This root also describes the hard bondage imposed on the Israelites in Exodus 1:14.

qeshi: Hardness or stubbornness.

The branch shows how the same quality can describe an unyielding will as well as a harsh condition.

מִצְרַיִם

Mitsrayim

GROWS FROM

צרר

ts-r-r

To press, bind, or constrict.

“Egypt” in this verse is Mitsrayim. Mitsrayim carries the image of the narrows, with the ending -ayim holding a dual form. The place-name itself echoes constriction, and here that narrowing takes the political form of people handed into a ruler’s grip.

ALSO GROWS

metzar: A narrow place or strait.

מֵצַר

It makes the name’s image of constriction visible within the verse.

tsar: Narrow or tight; also an adversary.

צַר

The word links narrowness with the force that presses against a person.

עַז

az

GROWS FROM

עזז

ʿ-z-z

To be strong or mighty.

“strong” in this verse is az. “Fierce” carries the force of strength turned toward rule. The verse holds power and oppression together in the image of a mighty king ruling over a people.

ALSO GROWS

oz: Strength or might.

עֹז

It names the force present in the king’s fierceness.

azaz: To be strong or mighty.

עָזַז

The verb makes clear that the fierceness grows from strength exerted over others.

When authority closes around people as force, rule becomes a source of harm.

And they made their lives bitter with hard service, in clay and in brick, and in all the labor of the field; every service they made them serve was with crushing.
Exodus 1:14 · SDVThe people’s lives become bitter under rulers who impose hard service.
All this I see, and I give my heart to every work done under the sun. There is a time when one human has power over another to his harm.
Ecclesiastes 8:9 · SDVRule itself can become an instrument of harm to the person under it.
But Jesus called them to him, and said, You know that the rulers of the nations lord it over them, and the great ones press authority down upon them.
Matthew 20:25 · SDVThe verse names the pattern of powerful rulers exercising dominion over others.
And it will be for a sign and for a witness to the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt, for they will cry out to the LORD because of those who press them, and he will send them a deliverer and a great one, and he will snatch them out.
Isaiah 19:20 · SDV

The same prophecy later names the people crying because of their oppressors and the LORD sending them a deliverer. Isaiah 19:4 shows the hand closing around them; 19:20 shows the sequence moving through their cry and deliverance.
