King James wording
King James Version
And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.THE KEY
The whole world is pictured as a river flowing uphill toward the one place made firm at its summit.
THE MEANING
The LORD’s house stands as the high, firm center in your horizon, and the peoples stream toward it. The verse imagines human belonging gathering around God’s presence across every nation.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that the LORD’s house belongs to one people alone dissolves here: all nations are pictured flowing toward it.
THE ROOT
וְנָהֲרוּ
wənāhărû
GROWS FROM
נהר
nāhar
To flow or stream; in another biblical use, to shine or radiate.
“flow toward” in this verse is wənāhărû. The nations do not merely approach: they become a current, moving toward the mountain fixed above the surrounding heights. Elsewhere this same root describes faces being “lightened” (Psalm 34:5), joining the image of movement with an echo of radiance.
ALSO GROWS
nāhār: River, stream.
נָהָר
The noun carries the same root as the nations’ flow, picturing them as a current moving toward the LORD’s house.
nāhar: Shine, radiate; be lightened.
נָהַר
Psalm 34:5 uses this root for faces being “lightened,” so the flow toward God’s presence also carries an echo of illumination.
וְנָכוֹן
wənāḵōn
GROWS FROM
כון
kûn
To be firm, fixed, or set in place; to prepare.
“set firm” in this verse is wənāḵōn. The mountain’s elevation is matched by its stability: the LORD’s house is set firmly as a point the nations can move toward. This root also names preparation and a fixed dwelling, joining what is made ready with what can hold its place.
ALSO GROWS
hēḵîn: Prepare, make ready.
הֵכִין
The same root describes setting something in readiness, adding the sense of a place made ready to receive the nations.
māḵôn: Fixed place, dwelling, foundation.
מָכוֹן
This branch makes the LORD’s house a firm dwelling and reference point toward which the peoples move.
THE PATTERN
The presence of God becomes the high point that draws peoples from many places into one shared direction.
But in the last days, the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be set firm at the head of the mountains, and it shall be lifted above the hills, and peoples shall flow toward it.Also, many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to soften the face of the LORD.And the nations of the delivered walk by its light, and the kings of the earth carry their weight and honor into it.THE THREAD
Then you shall see and flow together, and your heart shall tremble and widen, for the abundance of the sea shall turn to you; the strength of the nations shall come to you.Isaiah 60:5 uses the same Hebrew root נהר (nāhar) in “flow together,” connecting the nations’ flow toward the mountain with the city’s own flowing or radiance. In both verses, the root gathers movement toward the LORD’s dwelling and echoes illumination.
