This verse in the King James

King James wording
For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.

The repeated lowering verb carries the lofty city all the way from height to ground, leaving no remnant of its elevation.

When a power seems secure because it stands above others, its height can still collapse into the ground and dust beneath it. The lowering reaches both the lofty city and those who dwell on high; elevation does not shield them from being brought low.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that being high, fortified, or beyond reach makes a person or city untouchable: the verse carries the elevated all the way down to dust.

יַשְׁפִּילֶנָּה

yashpilennah

GROWS FROM

שפל

sh-p-l

To be low; in this causative form, to lower or bring low.

“lays low” in this verse is yashpilennah. English renders the motion as “layeth it low,” while Hebrew repeats a verb from the root ⁨שפל⁩ (sh-p-l), low. The city’s descent is the enacted form of lowliness: its height becomes a low place, down to the ground and dust.

ALSO GROWS

shaphal: Low, humble, or lowly.

שָׁפָל

This same-root word links the city’s lowered state with lowliness itself.

shephelah: Lowland or low country.

שְׁפֵלָה

This branch names low ground as a landscape, echoing the verse’s movement from a lofty city to the earth.

Apparent height offers no immunity: what stands above can be brought low, while the lowly can be lifted.

The lifted eyes of man shall be brought low, and the heights of men shall bow down, and the LORD alone shall be lifted high in that day.
Isaiah 2:11 · SDVHuman loftiness is brought low, and the LORD alone remains exalted.
The LORD lifts up the bowed, and brings the wicked low to the earth.
Psalm 147:6 · SDVThe verse sets lifting the meek beside casting the wicked down to the ground.
He has pulled the mighty down from their seats, and lifted up the low.
Luke 1:52 · SDVThe mighty are brought down while those of low degree are raised.
The lifted eyes of man shall be brought low, and the heights of men shall bow down, and the LORD alone shall be lifted high in that day.
Isaiah 2:11 · SDV

Isaiah 2:11 uses the same ⁨שפל⁩ (sh-p-l) root in “shall be humbled,” so both passages describe height being brought into lowliness through the same word-family. It then names the counterpoint: when human height falls, the LORD alone is exalted.
