This verse in the King James

King James wording
Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?

The ground is broken for the sake of seed; preparation has a purpose beyond the breaking.

The ground in you is opened so seed can enter; the plowman does not turn it forever, because sowing is the purpose. The verse gives the breaking a limit and points toward what the soil is made ready to receive.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that painful preparation is the whole story, or that disruption can only mean ruin. Here, the breaking serves sowing.

לִזְרֹעַ

lizroaʿ

GROWS FROM

זרע

To sow; the same root also names seed and offspring.

“to sow” in this verse is lizroaʿ. The Hebrew root joins the act of sowing to the seed itself. The plowing has a destination: it opens the ground to receive what already carries the possibility of growth.

ALSO GROWS

zeraʿ: Seed; offspring or descendants.

זֶרַע

The seed is what the plowman’s work prepares the ground to receive.

zoreaʿ: One who sows; a sower.

זֹרֵעַ

The same root names the person placing seed, joining the prepared ground to the life it receives.

אַדְמָתוֹ

adāmāto

GROWS FROM

אדם

The word-family is associated with soil and with redness; it also gives the name Adam.

The word for ground, adamah, shares its word-family with Adam, the human formed from the ground. The field is not just a surface being worked: it is soil made receptive to seed, as soil is the material from which human life is formed.

ALSO GROWS

adamah: Ground, soil.

אֲדָמָה

This is the soil the plowman opens and prepares to receive seed.

adam: Human; Adam.

אָדָם

The shared word-family links the cultivated ground with the human formed from the ground.

adom: Red.

אָדֹם

This related form carries the color association within the word-family.

The ground is opened for a season so it can receive seed and bring forth growth.

Sow for yourselves in alignment, reap in faithful love; break open your unbroken ground, for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and rains alignment upon you.
Hosea 10:12 · SDVBreaking the ground leads into sowing and reaping; the disruption belongs to a process with a harvest.
A time to bear, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.
Ecclesiastes 3:2 · SDVPlanting has its own time, showing that cultivation is one stage in a larger cycle.
The soil bears fruit by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
Mark 4:28 · SDVOnce the seed is received, growth unfolds in stages beyond the initial work of preparing the soil.
And God said, "Let the earth sprout green growth, the seed-bearing plant, and the fruit tree making fruit after its kind, whose seed is in it, upon the earth." And it was so.
Genesis 1:11 · SDV

Isaiah’s word for sowing and Genesis’s word for seed share the root ⁨זרע⁩ (z-r-ʿ): one root names both placing seed and the seed itself. The ground is opened to receive what already holds the capacity to grow.
