This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:

Even the one who knows the book cannot read it while it remains sealed: the barrier lies in the closure, not the reader’s learning.

The vision stands before you as words on a sealed book. You may know the book and still find it unreadable, because the closure itself is named as the barrier. Its inaccessibility does not mean its words are absent.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that inability to read always proves a lack of learning: here the verse names the seal as the reason the reader cannot read.

חָתוּם

ḥātûm

GROWS FROM

חתם

To seal or mark shut.

The sealed state is a closure placed on the book, not an absence of words. The same root names both the act of sealing and the signet that marks the boundary.

ALSO GROWS

ḥātam: To seal, to close with a mark.

חָתַם

This verb names the action behind the book’s sealed state.

ḥōtām: A signet or seal.

חוֹתָם

The signet marks the closure, making the boundary visible while the contents remain shut.

קְרָא

qərāʾ

GROWS FROM

קרא

To call, proclaim, or read aloud.

“call this out” in this verse is qərāʾ. The request is to voice the book’s words, not merely to inspect its pages. The root holds reading and calling together, but the seal prevents that voiced encounter with the text.

ALSO GROWS

qārāʾ: To call, proclaim, or read.

קָרָא

The reader is asked to bring the book’s words into speech.

miqrāʾ: A reading or public assembly.

מִקְרָא

This branch joins reading with words made audible among people, which the seal presently prevents.

יוֹדֵעַ

yōdēaʿ

GROWS FROM

ידע

To know or recognize.

“perceives” in this verse is yōdēaʿ. The Hebrew describes the reader as a knower of the book, yet he still cannot read it because it is sealed. Knowledge and access separate here: knowing the book does not open what is closed.

ALSO GROWS

yādaʿ: To know or recognize.

יָדַע

This verb is the knowing named in the description of the learned reader.

yediʿāh: Knowledge or knowing.

יְדִיעָה

The noun makes knowledge explicit, while the verse shows that knowledge alone cannot remove the seal.

A sealed revelation remains inaccessible until its closure is opened.

And in that day the deaf will hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind will see out of the gloom and out of the dark.
Isaiah 29:18 · SDVThe words of the book move from sealed inaccessibility to hearing and sight.
But you, Daniel, stop up the words, and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall multiply.
Daniel 12:4 · SDVThe book’s words are shut and sealed, so access is bound to the opening of what has been closed.
And one of the older ones says to me, Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome to open the scroll and to untie its seven seals.
Revelation 5:5 · SDVThe book becomes accessible when its seals are loosed.
And in that day the deaf will hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind will see out of the gloom and out of the dark.
Isaiah 29:18 · SDV

The same book that is sealed here appears as words the deaf hear, while the blind see out of darkness. The movement is from inaccessible text to restored hearing and sight, as the closure gives way.
