This verse in the King James

King James wording
And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it.

The Hebrew pictures each swing of the staff as part of a battle scored by tambourines and harps.

This verse meets you now with a stark image: the LORD’s blow against the oppressor comes with music, each swing carried in a rhythm. The instruments do not make the violence gentle; they sound alongside it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that divine judgment is shapeless rage: here each stroke has an appointed hand and a measured rhythm.

תְּנוּפָה

tenufah

GROWS FROM

נוף

⁨נוף⁩ (nuph) means to wave, swing, or move to and fro.

“battles of waving” in this verse is tenufah. Here, “shaking” carries the concrete motion of ⁨תְּנוּפָה⁩ (tenufah): swinging or waving back and forth. The staff’s blows are accompanied by tabrets and harps, so the battle’s violence arrives in a measured rhythm.

ALSO GROWS

yanif: he or it will wave, swing, or shake

יָנִיף

In Isaiah 10:15, the same root describes a rod that “should shake itself”; that image makes the staff’s motion here vivid and physical.

henif: to wave or swing

הֵנִיף

Leviticus 7:30 uses this verb for waving an offering before the LORD, showing that the same deliberate motion can mark presentation as well as a weapon’s swing.

When oppression is defeated, Scripture lets music sound beside the defeat, so victory is heard as well as seen.

And Miriam the prophet, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out behind her with timbrels and with dances.
Exodus 15:20 · SDVMiriam’s timbrel and the women’s dancing give deliverance a sound and a body.
When they began to shout and to praise, the LORD set those who lie in wait against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, who had come against Judah, and they were struck down.
2 Chronicles 20:22 · SDVThe singing begins as the LORD turns the attackers’ advance into defeat.
And I perceive a sea like glass mixed with fire, and those who overcame the beast, its image, its mark, and the number of its name, standing on that sea, holding the harps of God.
Revelation 15:2 · SDVThose who have overcome the beast stand with harps, with victory and music in the same scene.
His own hands shall bring the offerings of fire to the LORD, the fat upon the breast he shall bring, that the breast may be waved as a waving offering before the LORD.
Leviticus 7:30 · SDV

Leviticus uses the same ⁨נוף⁩ (nuph), “wave or swing,” root in “waved for a wave offering.” That connection makes Isaiah’s “battles of shaking” a specific, deliberate motion: the swinging blows are set to music, while the same motion elsewhere presents an offering before the LORD.
