King James wording
King James Version
Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.THE KEY
The outpouring of ruach changes the whole landscape: wilderness becomes field, and field becomes forest.
THE MEANING
The verse names an unfinished interval in the reader’s life: barrenness is not the ground’s final form. When ruach is poured from on high, wilderness becomes fruitful, and fruitfulness thickens into forest. Renewal reaches the whole landscape, not one isolated patch.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a barren season proves nothing more can grow here.
THE ROOT
רוּחַ
ruach
GROWS FROM
רוּחַ
r-w-ḥ
Moving air: wind or breath, and the unseen animating presence called spirit.
English uses “spirit,” but Hebrew ruach also names wind and breath. The verse’s outpouring is this life-bearing ruach, and the land itself changes with it.
ALSO GROWS
ruach: Wind moving across the land.
רוּחַ
The same word translated “spirit” can name the wind that moves through the world.
ruach: Breath animating living beings.
רוּחַ
The same word can name the breath of life, joining the outpouring to renewal.
ruachot: Winds or spirits; the plural form of ruach.
רוּחוֹת
The plural keeps the word’s range visible: ruach can refer to moving winds as well as spirits.
מָרוֹם
marom
GROWS FROM
רום
r-w-m
To be high, rise, or lift up.
“heights” in this verse is marom. The ruach comes מִמָּרוֹם, “from on high,” with a word built on the root of rising and elevation. The image sets the source above the barren ground, while the result is a landscape raised into abundance.
ALSO GROWS
ram: High or exalted.
רָם
It shares the root’s language of height with the source named in the verse.
herim: Lifted up or raised.
הֵרִים
The root can describe lifting, echoing the upward movement contained in “on high”.
romem: Exalted or raised high.
רוֹמֵם
This branch carries the same movement toward elevation that marks the verse’s source.
THE PATTERN
The outpouring of ruach turns what is barren into life that spreads.
For I will pour waters upon the thirsty, and streams upon the dry ground. I will pour my breath upon your seed, and my blessing upon your shoots. And it shall be afterward, that I will pour out my breath upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your elders will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. And it will come to pass in the last days, God says, I will pour out my breath upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.THE THREAD
For I will pour waters upon the thirsty, and streams upon the dry ground. I will pour my breath upon your seed, and my blessing upon your shoots.Isaiah 44:3 joins the dry ground receiving water with ruach being poured upon the people. The pairing makes the land’s transformation and the outpouring one movement of renewal.
