King James wording
King James Version
Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.THE KEY
The “fearful heart” is described as a heart that has hurried ahead, and God answers its inner rush by coming to deliver.
THE MEANING
When your heart rushes ahead into fear, this verse meets you there: God comes with vengeance and recompense, and he delivers you. “Be strong; fear not” rests on that promised arrival, not on proof that danger is absent.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A racing, fearful heart is not proof that God is absent or that deliverance is no longer coming.
THE ROOT
לְנִמְהֲרֵי־לֵב
lenimharei-lev
GROWS FROM
מהר
mahar
To hurry, hasten, or move quickly.
“hurried of heart” in this verse is lenimharei-lev. The Hebrew phrase behind “fearful heart” is “hasty of heart”: fear appears as an inward rush, not simply a fixed state. The next clause answers that rush with the promise of God’s arrival.
ALSO GROWS
mahar: To hurry or hasten.
מָהַר
This verb makes the heart’s fear sound like movement, an inward running ahead.
meherah: Quickly, swiftly.
מְהֵרָה
This related form carries the same sense of speed, illuminating the hurried quality in the phrase.
וְיֹשַׁעֲכֶם
ve-yosha'akhem
GROWS FROM
ישע
yasha
To deliver, rescue, and bring into safety; the root carries the movement from constriction into spaciousness.
The verb says God comes and delivers you; this same root also names deliverance and the deliverer. Rescue is movement out of what confines and into room to live.
ALSO GROWS
yeshuah: Deliverance.
יְשׁוּעָה
The noun names the rescue itself, making deliverance a direct branch of the promise here.
moshia: Deliverer.
מוֹשִׁיעַ
This form names the one who delivers, the one who, in this verse, comes to save.
Yeshua: A name carrying the nature of deliverance.
יֵשׁוּעַ
The name preserves the root’s connection between a person and the act of delivering.
THE PATTERN
God’s presence meets fear with steadiness and deliverance, even before danger is shown to be absent.
Hold fast and be firm. Do not fear, and do not quake before them. For the LORD your God is the one who walks with you. He will not release you, nor leave you.A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my deliverance; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I tremble?Straightway Jesus spoke to them, saying, Be bold; I AM; do not be afraid.THE THREAD
Look, God is my deliverance. I will lean my full weight and not tremble, for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song, and he has become my deliverance.“Salvation” here is יְשׁוּעָה (yeshuah, deliverance), from the same root יָשַׁע (yasha, deliver) as “save” in Isaiah 35:4. Isaiah 12:2 joins that deliverance with trust and the end of fear, opening “he will come and save you” as the arrival of God, who is himself your deliverance.
