King James wording
King James Version
Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.THE KEY
The one who lays waste is not the first cause of the ruin: the verse says the devastation was formed long ago and is arriving now through that agent.
THE MEANING
The verse confronts you now with an unsettling claim: the one who lays waste acts, yet the devastation was formed before that agent appears and is brought into the present by the voice speaking. The destruction remains real, and the agent remains real, but neither is the first cause in this account.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie it undoes is that the destroyer is the ultimate author of the ruin; the verse attributes its forming and arrival to a prior voice.
THE ROOT
וִיצַרְתִּיהָ
viyatsartihah
GROWS FROM
י־צ־ר
y-ṣ-r
To form, fashion, or give shape.
The Hebrew word comes from the same root as the word for a potter: what is formed has a shaper. Here the ruin is not presented as a force that suddenly authors itself; it belongs to something given shape before it arrives.
ALSO GROWS
yōṣēr: One who forms; a potter.
יֹצֵר
The potter gives shape to material, echoing the verse’s claim that the devastation was formed before it came into view.
yēṣer: Formation, design, or inclination.
יֵצֶר
This branch links forming with what has been shaped or intended, deepening the verse’s movement from an earlier design to its present arrival.
הֲבֵאתִיהָ
hăvēʾtîhā
GROWS FROM
בוא
b-w-ʾ
To come or enter; in a causative form, to bring in.
“Now I have brought it” in this verse is hăvēʾtîhā. The Hebrew verb is built from the word for coming: the voice says it caused the event to come into the present. What was formed long ago is now arriving as an actual devastation.
ALSO GROWS
bōʾ: To come or enter.
בּוֹא
The root holds the sense of arrival inside the verse’s claim that the formed event has now come to pass.
māvoʾ: An entrance or entry.
מָבוֹא
This related word for an entry echoes the passage from an earlier forming into the event’s entry into the present.
שָׁמַעְתָּ
shamata
GROWS FROM
שמע
sh-m-ʿ
To hear, listen, or heed.
The verse opens by asking whether this has already been heard, placing the ruin beneath a voice that precedes the visible event. The root can carry the sense of attentive listening, so the question calls attention to what the event reveals about its source.
ALSO GROWS
shemuʿah: A report or tidings; something heard.
שְׁמֻעָה
This branch connects the opening question to a report already sounding before the present devastation.
shōmēaʿ: One who hears or listens.
שֹׁמֵעַ
The hearing in the verse is addressed to someone who can recognize that the present event has a voice and a history behind it.
THE PATTERN
What enters the present can be the enactment of a design formed before its visible arrival.
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient days the things not yet made, saying, My counsel will stand, and all that I delight in I will make.As for you, you planned evil against me, but God planned it for good, to make it as it is this day, to keep a great people alive. This one, handed over by the marked-out counsel and foreknowing of God, you nailed to the cross by the hands of the unbounded, and you killed him.THE THREAD
Calling a swooping bird from the sunrise, the man of my counsel from a far land. Yes, I have spoken it, and I will also bring it in; I have shaped it, and I will also make it.Isaiah 37:26 uses יָצַר (yatsar, “to form”) for what is established before the ruin arrives; Isaiah 46:11 uses the same root in יָצַרְתִּי (yatsarti, “I formed” or “purposed it”). The shared root keeps purpose connected with giving shape: the design is formed before it is brought into the present.
