King James wording
King James Version
For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.THE KEY
The surviving few are not abandoned leftovers: the LORD’s own zeal brings them forth from Jerusalem.
THE MEANING
When pressure leaves only what remains, this verse sees that remnant still going forth from Jerusalem, a name that carries the sound of wholeness. The people who escape are brought forth by the LORD of hosts’ ardent zeal, moving from constriction toward wholeness.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a diminished remnant has been abandoned: the verse attributes its emergence to the LORD’s zeal.
THE ROOT
קִנְאַת
qin’at
GROWS FROM
קנא
q-n-ʾ
Ardent jealousy or zeal; the heat of a passionate claim.
Hebrew keeps zeal and jealousy within one word-family: both carry the heat of an undivided claim. Here that ardor is the force that brings the remnant forth.
ALSO GROWS
qin'ah: Ardent zeal or jealousy.
קִנְאָה
The verse names the LORD’s ardor as the cause of the remnant’s emergence.
qanna: One characterized by zeal or jealousy.
קַנָּא
This form makes the shared quality audible: the action arises from passionate commitment.
שְׁאֵרִית
she'erit
GROWS FROM
שאר
sh-ʾ-r
To remain, be left over, or leave remaining.
English “remnant” can sound like a static leftover. The Hebrew grows from “remain” and “be left”; here, what remains is going forth, and the verse attributes its emergence to the LORD’s zeal.
ALSO GROWS
she'erit: What remains or is left over.
שְׁאֵרִית
This is the verse’s word for the people who survive and go forth.
hish'ir: To leave something or someone in place.
הִשְׁאִיר
The same root names both what remains and the act of leaving it there, keeping continued presence audible inside “remnant.”
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שלם
sh-l-m
To be whole, complete, or sound.
Jerusalem carries the sound of שָׁלוֹם (shalom, wholeness) with the dual ending -ayim. The remnant goes forth from a place whose name holds wholeness, while the LORD’s zeal brings the movement about.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, completeness, soundness.
שָׁלוֹם
The name Jerusalem carries this sound of wholeness into the verse’s movement out of threat.
shalem: Whole or complete.
שָׁלֵם
This branch makes the name’s connection to wholeness visible in the place from which the remnant goes forth.
THE PATTERN
A threatened people’s future continues through a remnant whose preservation comes from God’s action.
The remnant will turn back, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.And I will set the one who limps as a remnant, and the one who was driven far off as a mighty nation, and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from now until the ages.So also now, in this present season, there is a remnant left behind, picked out by favor.THE THREAD
The remnant will turn back, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.Both verses use שְׁאֵרִית (she’erit, remnant), from שאר (sh-ʾ-r), “remain” or “be left.” Here the remnant goes forth from Jerusalem; there it returns to the mighty God. The shared root keeps survival in motion rather than making it a leftover state.
