This verse in the King James

King James wording
Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail with looking upward: O LORD, I am oppressed; undertake for me.

“Undertake for me” asks the LORD to become the speaker’s surety, to stand responsible for him when his voice and eyes are failing.

When distress reduces your speech to broken chatter and your eyes tire of looking upward, this verse gives that condition its own voice. It names the oppression and asks the LORD to stand as surety for you, taking up your cause when you cannot carry it alone.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that you must speak clearly or hold your own case together before you can ask for help.

עָרְבֵנִי

ʿārḇēnî

GROWS FROM

ערב

ʿ-r-b

To pledge oneself as surety: to guarantee another’s liability or stand responsible for them.

“stand surety for me” in this verse is ʿārḇēnî. The English “undertake” can sound like a general offer of help, but ⁨עָרְבֵנִי⁩ (ʿārḇēnî, “be surety for me”) asks the LORD to stand as guarantor. The speaker asks God to take up responsibility for his case, not merely to witness his oppression.

ALSO GROWS

ʿārēḇ: A person who binds himself to answer for another’s obligation.

עָרֵב

Judah says, “I will be surety for him” (Genesis 43:9); the same root makes Isaiah’s plea a request for someone to stand responsible on his behalf.

ʿērāḇōn: A pledge given as a guarantee.

עֵרָבוֹן

This branch makes the idea of surety concrete: the speaker asks the LORD to become the guarantee for the one under pressure.

When a sufferer cannot secure their own case, the language of surety brings another to stand responsible for them.

I will be the pledge for him. From my hand you will seek him. If I do not bring him to you and stand him before you, then let me have missed the mark toward you all the days.
Genesis 43:9 · SDVJudah takes responsibility for another’s safe return, showing a person becoming surety when someone else cannot secure the outcome.
Stand as a pledge for your servant, for good; do not let the proud press me.
Psalm 119:122 · SDVThe servant asks God to stand surety while facing oppression, closely echoing Isaiah’s plea.
By this much, Jesus has become the pledge of a stronger covenant.
Hebrews 7:22 · SDVThe image of surety appears again as someone standing guarantee for a covenant.
Stand as a pledge for your servant, for good; do not let the proud press me.
Psalm 119:122 · SDV

Isaiah’s “undertake for me” and this verse’s “Be surety” share the Hebrew root ⁨ערב⁩ (ʿ-r-b, “pledge oneself as surety”). Psalm places that plea beside “let not the proud oppress me,” revealing Isaiah’s request as a call for a guarantor against oppression.
