King James wording
King James Version
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.THE KEY
The verse answers fear with more than reassurance: God names three active ways of keeping you standing, strengthening, helping, and holding you fast.
THE MEANING
Your fear does not place you outside God’s presence: God is with you and names himself as your God. The promised response is concrete, strength, help, and a steadying hand.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that fear proves you have been abandoned or must hold yourself together alone.
THE ROOT
תְּמַכְתִּיךָ
temakhtikha
GROWS FROM
תמך
tamak
To take hold, support, or sustain.
“hold you up” in this verse is temakhtikha. The verb translated “uphold” carries the image of taking hold and sustaining. After “strengthen” and “help,” the verse ends with active support that reaches all the way to your footing.
ALSO GROWS
tamak: To hold, support, or sustain.
תָּמַךְ
This is the verb’s basic form and makes the promise of being upheld a promise of being held steady.
tomekh: One who supports or holds up.
תּוֹמֵךְ
This form describes the one doing the holding, keeping the verse’s image of support active.
אִמַּצְתִּיךָ
immatzti-kha
GROWS FROM
אמץ
amats
To make firm or strong.
“grip you” in this verse is immatzti-kha. The root carries firmness within strength: what is strengthened is made steady. Beside help and being held, this strength is named as something God supplies to you.
ALSO GROWS
ometz: Courage or firmness.
אֹמֶץ
This noun shows the root’s connection between strength and the steadiness that fear unsettles.
ammits: Strong or mighty.
אַמִּיץ
This adjective carries the same quality of strength that the verse promises to give.
צִדְקִי
tsidqi
GROWS FROM
צדק
tsadaq
Rightness, justice, and alignment.
The “right hand” that upholds you is described through God’s own righteousness: the hand acts from alignment and rightness. The image joins being supported with being held in what is rightly ordered.
ALSO GROWS
tsedeq: Rightness, justice, or alignment.
צֶדֶק
This noun shows the quality named in “my righteousness” as rightness and alignment.
tsaddiq: Righteous or aligned; one who acts rightly.
צַדִּיק
This form carries the root’s sense of a person or action in right alignment.
THE PATTERN
When fear rises, God’s presence becomes practical support: strength, help, and steadiness.
To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a help found very near in the narrow place. So that we may boldly say, The LORD is my helper, and I will not fear. What will a human do to me?And the LORD is the one who goes before your face. He will be with you. He will not release you, nor leave you. Do not fear, and do not be shattered.THE THREAD
Grasp my steps along your tracks, so that my footsteps do not totter.Isaiah’s “uphold” and Psalm’s “hold up” use forms of תמך (tamak), to support or hold fast. Psalm 17:5 makes the image immediate: being upheld means your steps do not slip.
