This verse in the King James

King James wording
For I beheld, and there was no man; even among them, and there was no counsellor, that, when I asked of them, could answer a word.

In Hebrew, an answer is a word returned to the asker, so this silence is a failed return, not merely an empty room.

When you look to a voice for guidance, its claim is tested by what it can return when asked. Here there is no counselor among them, and no word comes back.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A crowd of confident voices can provide real counsel simply by claiming authority.

יוֹעֵץ

yo'ets

GROWS FROM

יעץ

To advise, counsel, or deliberate.

“counsellor” in this verse is yo'ets. This word points to someone whose role is to offer direction, not merely someone standing in the crowd. Its absence makes the silence diagnostic: these voices cannot supply counsel when called upon.

ALSO GROWS

etsah: Counsel or advice.

עֵצָה

The same root names the guidance that is missing when no counsellor can answer.

ya'ats: To advise or counsel.

יָעַץ

The verb shows that counsel is an act of giving direction, something the voices here fail to do.

yo'ets: Counsellor or adviser.

יוֹעֵץ

This is the word used for the absent adviser in the verse.

יָשִׁיבוּ

yashivu

GROWS FROM

שׁוּב

To turn back or return; in this form, to bring back or answer.

“return a word” in this verse is yashivu. The English “answer” hides a return-motion: a response is something sent back to the one who asks. The verse names a question with nothing returned.

ALSO GROWS

shuv: To return or turn back.

שׁוּב

The root makes the expected answer feel like a word returning toward the asker.

heshiv: To bring back; to answer or reply.

הֵשִׁיב

This answering form makes the missing response a failed return.

A voice that cannot answer when called upon cannot provide living guidance.

They lift him on the shoulder, and bear him, and set him in his place, and he stands; from his place he does not move. Even if one cries to him, he does not answer, nor deliver him from his narrow place.
Isaiah 46:7 · SDVThe one cried to cannot answer, exposing the silence beneath its appearance of power.
They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see.
Psalm 115:5 · SDVThe image of mouths that do not speak makes visible the inability to offer a living response.
You know that when you were of the nations, you were carried away to voiceless idols, as you were led.
1 Corinthians 12:2 · SDVThe phrase “dumb idols” names guides that cannot speak back.
Who marks out the breath of the LORD, or, as his counselor, makes him know?
Isaiah 40:13 · SDV

The same counsel-root names the missing adviser here and appears in Isaiah 40:13 in the question of who can offer the LORD counsel. That echo turns the silence into a question about where counsel comes from.
