King James wording
King James Version
But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.THE KEY
The voice that calls you by name is also the one who reclaims you as its own.
THE MEANING
You are addressed as someone formed, reclaimed, and known by name. “Fear not” rests on that belonging; it does not pretend danger is unreal or require you to feel unafraid.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that danger means you are forgotten or abandoned meets the answer: you are called by name and claimed as belonging.
THE ROOT
גְּאַלְתִּיךָ
ge’altikha
GROWS FROM
גאל
g-ʾ-l
To reclaim as kin; to act as a kinsman who recovers what belongs to the family.
“bought you back” in this verse is ge’altikha. גָּאַל (ga’al, reclaim as kin) carries a relationship inside redemption: the one who redeems steps in as family. The verse moves from being reclaimed to being called by name and claimed as belonging.
ALSO GROWS
go’el: A kinsman who acts to recover a relative or what belongs to them.
גֹּאֵל
This branch shows the kinship inside “I have redeemed thee”: the rescue is personal reclamation.
ge’ullah: The act or right of reclaiming what belongs to a family.
גְּאֻלָּה
Its connection to kinship makes “thou art mine” part of the redemption itself.
קָרָאתִיךָ
qara’tikha
GROWS FROM
קרא
q-r-ʾ
To call out, summon, name, or proclaim.
“called you by your name” in this verse is qara’tikha. קָרָא (qara, call or proclaim) can name someone as well as summon them. Here the spoken name, שֵׁם (shem, name as nature), is personal recognition: you are addressed in what is particular to you.
ALSO GROWS
qore: A caller or reader who voices words aloud.
קֹרֵא
The name is spoken and heard; it is an address, not a label left at a distance.
miqra: Something called together, including an assembly or public reading.
מִקְרָא
This branch shows that calling can gather people into recognition and presence.
יֹצֶרְךָ
yotserkha
GROWS FROM
יצר
y-ts-r
To shape or fashion, as a potter shapes material.
“shaped” in this verse is yotserkha. The verse pairs creation with the close work of forming. The one who claims you is also the one who shapes you; your belonging reaches into the way you are formed.
ALSO GROWS
yotser: One who shapes or forms.
יֹצֵר
The potter image makes “formed thee” an intimate act of shaping.
yetser: A form or inward disposition.
יֵצֶר
This branch extends forming beyond an outer shape to the inward pattern of a person.
THE PATTERN
Being called by name marks a relationship in which the caller knows and claims the one addressed.
And the LORD said to Moses, I will do this word also that you have spoken, for you have found favor in my eyes, and I have known you by name.Bend your ear to me, coastlands, and bend your ear, peoples from far. The LORD has called me from the womb; from my mother's inward parts he has spoken my name.To him the gatekeeper opens, and the sheep hear and respond to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out.THE THREAD
I have wiped away your rebellions like a thick cloud, and your missed marks like a cloud. Turn back to me, for I have bought you back.“Redeemed” repeats גָּאַל (ga’al, reclaim as kin), the root that carries kinship inside reclamation. Here that reclaiming stands beside what is blotted out: the one who calls you by name also releases what obscures your return.
