King James wording
King James Version
But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.THE KEY
The two losses arrive whole, while the enchantments of binding prove unable to hold them back.
THE MEANING
When you stake your safety on ways of controlling what comes, this verse says they cannot command the hour or blunt the force of loss. The losses it names are terrible and concrete: children lost and widowhood, arriving in one moment and in their full measure.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that enough hidden knowledge or control can make me unreachable by loss.
THE ROOT
כְּתֻמָּם
kətummām
GROWS FROM
תמם
To be complete, whole, or brought to its full measure.
“in full” in this verse is kətummām. Here, “perfection” carries the sense of completeness: the two losses come in their full measure. The root’s other forms describe what is whole or complete, sharpening the verse’s force as total, not partial, bereavement.
ALSO GROWS
tam: Whole, complete; also used for integrity.
תָּם
This form makes the root’s sense of wholeness clear: the losses reach their full extent.
tamim: Whole, complete, without blemish.
תָּמִים
Its sense of being without a missing part echoes the completeness of the two losses.
tamam: To be complete or come to an end.
תָּמַם
This verb gives the phrase its sense of an outcome brought to completion.
חֲבָרַיִךְ
ḥăbārāyiḵ
GROWS FROM
חבר
To join, bind, or associate.
“bindings” in this verse is ḥăbārāyiḵ. The word rendered “enchantments” belongs to a root of joining and binding, also used for a companion or one joined to another. The verse sets these binding practices beside losses they cannot hold back.
ALSO GROWS
ḥābar: To join, unite, or bind.
חָבַר
This basic sense gives “enchantments” the image of binding forces or outcomes.
ḥāver: A companion or associate.
חָבֵר
A companion is one joined to another, showing the root’s ordinary relational sense.
ḥōvēr ḥāver: A charmer, literally one who binds a binding.
חֹבֵר חָבֶר
This phrase in Deuteronomy 18:11 uses the same root in a charm-making context, making the binding sense especially visible.
THE PATTERN
Stored resources and assumed control cannot guarantee safety from the sudden arrival of loss.
Riches do not profit on the day of overflowing, but alignment snatches from death. For humankind does not perceive its time. As fish are caught in an evil net, and as birds are caught in the snare, so humankind is caught in an evil time, when it falls upon them in a flash. But God said to him, Mindless one, this night your living soul will be demanded back from you. Then whose will those things be that you have made ready?THE THREAD
Therefore her blows shall come in one day, death, and mourning, and hunger; and she shall be burned down with fire, for strong is the LORD God who judges her.Isaiah’s paired losses arrive in one day; Revelation gives Babylon death, mourning, and famine in that same span. The later verse opens the image further: the collapse comes as a whole event, not as one isolated misfortune.
