King James wording
King James Version
Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.THE KEY
A sacred name can be on the tongue while its nature is absent from the life.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks now to anyone who carries a sacred identity or invokes God’s name: the words can be present while truth and alignment are absent. Being called by a name does not, by itself, make a person’s speech dependable or their life aligned with what that name carries.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Saying God’s name or carrying a religious identity guarantees that a person’s words and life are true and aligned.
THE ROOT
אֱמֶת
emet
GROWS FROM
אמן
To be firm, steady, or reliable.
Emet names truth as something dependable, not merely something spoken. Set beside oaths and the invocation of names, it exposes the gap between saying the words and standing in what they claim.
ALSO GROWS
amen: Truly; so be it; firm affirmation.
אָמֵן
An affirmation carries weight when it rests on what is dependable.
ne’eman: Reliable or trustworthy.
נֶאֱמָן
This branch makes the root’s firmness visible as a quality of someone who can be trusted.
צְדָקָה
tzedakah
GROWS FROM
צדק
To be right or just; right alignment.
The verse joins truth’s dependability with right alignment: what is said and how a person stands must agree. Invoking the LORD’s name does not itself make that alignment present.
ALSO GROWS
tsedeq: Rightness or justice.
צֶדֶק
It shows the standard of rightness named by the accusation.
tsaddiq: A just or aligned person.
צַדִּיק
This branch brings the root into a person’s way of being, beyond a spoken claim.
THE PATTERN
A sacred claim is exposed when a person’s words and life do not embody the truth they name.
Hear and respond to the word of the LORD, you children of Israel, for the LORD has a quarrel with the ones who settle in the land, because there is no truth, nor faithful love, nor knowledge of God in the land.Little children, let us not love in word, nor in the tongue, but in works and in truth. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter into the governance of the heavens, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in the heavens.THE THREAD
And I will bring them, and they shall settle in the midst of Jerusalem; they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in alignment.Zechariah uses the same pair, “truth” and “righteousness,” that Isaiah says are absent. Isaiah shows the name invoked without them; Zechariah describes belonging expressed through them.
