This verse in the King James

King James wording
Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

You are not merely remembered: you are carved into God’s palms, and your walls never leave his sight.

You are not a passing thought. You are engraved on the palms, and the walls around your life remain continually in view.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that feeling abandoned means you have been forgotten meets an image of permanent inscription and unbroken attention.

חַקֹּתִיךְ

ḥaqqōtîkh

GROWS FROM

חקק

to cut or engrave; by extension, to inscribe or decree

“carved” in this verse is ḥaqqōtîkh. The Hebrew word for “graven” belongs to a family that also names an established statute and a lawgiver: what is cut in is fixed, not a fleeting thought. The verse places you on the palms and your walls continually before the speaker, joining lasting inscription with sustained regard.

ALSO GROWS

ḥoq: statute, decree

חֹק

A statute is something laid down and established, another branch of the root’s sense of what is fixed.

məḥōqēq: lawgiver, one who decrees

מְחֹקֵק

This branch carries the root from marking something out to establishing what is laid down.

Inscription and bodily signs make belonging or remembrance visible rather than abstract.

And it shall be a mark for you upon your hand, and a remembrance between your eyes, so that the instruction of the LORD may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt.
Exodus 13:9 · SDVA sign upon the hand makes remembrance something carried on the body.
But this is the covenant I will cut with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD. I will set my instruction within them, and write it upon their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jeremiah 31:33 · SDVWriting in the heart makes the bond present within, as the engraving on the palms makes the person present before the speaker.
From what remains, let no one give me toil, for I carry the brands of Jesus in my body.
Galatians 6:17 · SDVThe body itself bears marks that make a bond visible.
Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she would not have compassion on the son of her womb? Even they may forget, but I will not forget you.
Isaiah 49:15 · SDV

The line before this one names the fear of being forgotten; the next image answers with an inscription that cannot pass out of sight. The movement is from the possibility of forgetting even in the closest human bond to the permanence of being carved into the palms.
