King James wording
King James Version
He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.THE KEY
The same Hebrew root names the servant as righteous and names what he does: he brings many into alignment.
THE MEANING
The servant sees the travail of his living self, and his satisfaction comes from what that travail brings forth. Through his knowing, perception formed by encounter, many are brought into alignment, while he carries their crookedness. The verse holds your suffering beside a form of bearing whose fruit reaches beyond the one who suffers.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that suffering is necessarily fruitless: here, travail is seen, satisfaction follows, and many are brought into alignment through what the servant bears.
THE ROOT
יַצְדִּיק
yatsdiq
GROWS FROM
צדק
To be right or just; to align with what is right.
“align” in this verse is yatsdiq. The verse uses this root for both the servant as “righteous” and his act of “justifying” many. English separates the description from the action, while Hebrew shows the servant’s alignment and the bringing of many into alignment as branches of one root.
ALSO GROWS
tsaddiq: Righteous; one who is in the right.
צַדִּיק
This is the same root describing the servant, joining who he is to what he does.
tsedaqah: Righteousness, justice, or right action.
צְדָקָה
This branch shows the root reaching beyond a state of being right to rightness expressed in action.
דַּעְתּוֹ
daʿto
GROWS FROM
ידע
To know, recognize, or perceive.
The word for “knowledge” comes from ידע, the verb for knowing and perceiving. The servant’s knowing carries the sense of recognition formed through encounter, not mere information, and the verse joins that knowing to many being brought into alignment.
ALSO GROWS
yadaʿ: To know or perceive.
יָדַע
The verb behind “knowledge” keeps the verse’s knowing connected to perception.
yodeaʿ: One who knows.
יֹדֵעַ
This branch keeps the focus on a knower, making knowledge something lived rather than merely possessed.
יִסְבֹּל
yisbol
GROWS FROM
סבל
To carry or bear a load.
“carry” in this verse is yisbol. The final verb comes from סבל, a root of carrying burdens. “Bear their iniquities” is therefore a load-bearing image: the servant takes their crookedness upon himself rather than remaining at a distance from it.
ALSO GROWS
sevel: A burden or load.
סֵבֶל
This noun makes explicit the weight contained in the verb “bear.”
sabbal: A porter or carrier of loads.
סַבָּל
This branch names the one who carries, sharpening the servant’s action into a concrete image.
THE PATTERN
A burden carried for others can become a passage through which they move toward wholeness.
Even to old age I AM, and to gray hair I will bear you. I have made, and I will lift, I will bear, and I will slip you free.If you see the donkey of the one who hates you crouching under his load, and would hold back from helping him, you shall surely unload it with him.Carry one another's weights, and so you fill up the instruction of the Anointed One.THE THREAD
In the LORD all the seed of Israel shall be aligned, and shall boast. The same root צדק stands behind “justify” here and “justified” there: the servant brings many into alignment, and Israel’s seed is described as aligned in the LORD. The root opens the verse’s action outward from the servant to a people.
