King James wording
King James Version
Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.THE KEY
The repeated Hebrew “gather” gives the threat its full force, while “not by me” breaks the false equation between an assembled force and an authorized one.
THE MEANING
The force gathering against you may be real and organized, yet its presence does not mean God sent it. Its assembly does not decide your end; the verse says it falls in relation to you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that if opposition gathers in force, its numbers prove God is behind it and its victory is settled.
THE ROOT
גּוֹר יָגוּרוּ
gōr yāgūrū
GROWS FROM
גור
g-w-r
To sojourn or dwell; in this form, to gather or assemble.
The Hebrew repeats the root in an infinitive and verb form, roughly “gather they will gather,” intensifying the action. The same root appears in words for a sojourner and a dwelling, giving the assembly the sense of a presence taking up space; the verse still separates that presence from its source.
ALSO GROWS
gēr: Sojourner, resident stranger
גֵּר
The shared root links gathering with dwelling among others, sharpening the image of a converging presence.
māgôr: Dwelling place, sojourn
מָגוֹר
This branch carries the sense of taking up a place, while the verse denies that this gathered force comes from God.
נָפַל
nāphal
GROWS FROM
נפל
n-p-l
To fall, drop, or be brought down.
“fall because of you” in this verse is nāphal. The verse turns from a group assembling to that group losing its standing. A related noun, mapālāh, means ruin or downfall, so the image reaches beyond a retreat: the hostile force collapses.
ALSO GROWS
nōfēl: One who is falling; falling
נֹפֵל
This form keeps the fall as an active descent, the outcome named for the gathering.
mapālāh: Downfall, ruin
מַפָּלָה
This related noun shows the deeper reach of the root: the assembled threat loses its standing and comes to ruin.
THE PATTERN
A gathering’s size does not decide its authority; its source and purpose do.
Take counsel together, and it shall be broken; speak the word, and it shall not stand, for God is with us.For in truth, in this city, against your set-apart servant Jesus, whom you anointed, Herod and Pontius Pilate were gathered together with the nations and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your counsel had marked out beforehand to be done. For where two or three are gathered together in my nature, there I am in the midst of them.THE THREAD
No weapon shaped against you will push through, and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you will condemn. This is the portion of the servants of the LORD, and their alignment is from me, declares the LORD.The next verse names the same opposition in concrete forms: a weapon and a tongue raised in judgment. Together, the verses show that neither an organized force nor an accusation gets the final word over you.
