King James wording
King James Version
Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed: even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice.THE KEY
The bed and the sacrifice share one summit: what is exalted as desire also receives devotion.
THE MEANING
The verse places the bed on a high mountain and says the ascent there ends in sacrifice; desire and ritual devotion share one place. It speaks now wherever what is given the highest place also receives a person’s loyalty and attention.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that desire and worship occupy separate, unrelated parts of life: the verse places the bed and sacrifice in the same elevated place.
THE ROOT
לִזְבֹּחַ זֶבַח
lizbōaḥ zebaḥ
GROWS FROM
זבח
z-b-ḥ
To slaughter, especially in sacrifice.
“slaughter a sacrifice” in this verse is lizbōaḥ zebaḥ. The Hebrew repeats the root: literally, “to sacrifice a sacrifice.” The same root names the altar, מִזְבֵּחַ (mizbēaḥ), so the ascent ends in a whole sacrificial setting, not a vague religious gesture.
ALSO GROWS
zebaḥ: Sacrifice; sacrificial slaughter.
זֶבַח
This is the noun repeated after the verb, making the act and its offering one phrase.
mizbēaḥ: Altar; a place for sacrifice.
מִזְבֵּחַ
Its shared root ties the sacrifice to the altar and sharpens the verse’s joining of desire and worship.
מִשְׁכָּבֵךְ
mishkāvēkh
GROWS FROM
שכב
sh-k-b
To lie down.
The word for “bed” grows from the verb “to lie down”: it names the place where one reclines. The same noun returns in the next verse, where the bed is enlarged and joined to a covenant.
ALSO GROWS
shākab: To lie down or recline.
שָׁכַב
This verb is the seed beneath the bed’s name, keeping the verse’s image bodily and concrete.
mishkāv: A bed or lying place.
מִשְׁכָּב
The same noun appears again in Isaiah 57:8, where its enlargement makes the image a chosen allegiance.
THE PATTERN
What is raised as desire becomes a place of devotion.
They slaughter upon the heads of the mountains and send up smoke upon the hills, beneath oaks and poplars and terebinths, for their shade is good. Therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your brides shall commit adultery.who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and bowed down and served the creation beside the one who created, who is praised for the ages. Amen. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.THE THREAD
Behind the door and the doorpost you have set up your remembrance, for away from me you have uncovered yourself and gone up. You have widened your bed, and you have cut a covenant with them. You have loved their bed where you saw it.The same root שכב (sh-k-b, “to lie down”) names the bed in both verses. Verse 8 enlarges that bed and joins it to a covenant, showing the summit’s bed as an allegiance, not merely a setting.
