This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:

The being named “burning one” carries the altar’s fire toward Isaiah, making the holy encounter tangible.

A seraph, a “burning one,” flies to you carrying a live coal from the altar. The verse brings altar fire within human reach, where its nearness is both tangible and dangerous.

GROWS FROM

שׂרף

Burn; the root also names a fiery serpent or burning one.

“seraphims” in this verse is śerāphîm. “Seraphim” carries the nature of burning ones, so the fire they bear is more than an incidental object in the scene. The same root can name a fiery serpent, keeping the word’s dangerous heat in view.

ALSO GROWS

śārāph: Fiery serpent; burning one.

שָׂרָף

The same word names the fiery serpents in Numbers 21:6, making the seraph’s burning nature explicit.

śāraph: To burn or consume.

שָׂרַף

This verb shows the action held in the seraph’s name: burning is not merely an image attached to the being but part of the root’s meaning.

Fire from the divine presence moves into the material world and acts on what it reaches.

And a fire came out from before the LORD, and ate upon the altar the rising offering and the fat; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.
Leviticus 9:24 · SDVFire comes from before the LORD and consumes the offering on the altar.
And he touched it to my mouth, and said, Look, this has touched your lips, and your crookedness turns aside, and your falling short is covered.
Isaiah 6:7 · SDVThe coal carried from the altar reaches Isaiah’s lips, and the verse names what happens when it touches him.
And the messenger takes the censer, and fills it with fire from the altar, and throws it into the earth; and there are voices, and thunders, and lightnings, and a shaking.
Revelation 8:5 · SDVFire from the altar is cast into the earth, where it arrives with upheaval.
And the LORD sent burning serpents among the people, and they bit the people, and many of Israel died.
Numbers 21:6 · SDV

The Hebrew word translated “seraphim” here is the same word used for the fiery serpents in Numbers. The shared root names their burning nature, and holds its danger alongside the coal carried from the altar.
