This verse in the King James

King James wording
Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows?

The verse pictures one vast arrival and many intimate homecomings in the same movement.

The question makes arrival visible before it explains it: a cloudlike sweep approaches, while each dove finds its own opening. What looks like one great movement is also many distinct returns toward shelter.

תְּעוּפֶינָה

təʿūp̄ênāh

GROWS FROM

עוף

ʿ-w-p̄

To fly or move through the air; the same root also names a flying creature.

“fly” in this verse is təʿūp̄ênāh. The verb and the noun for a flying creature share the same seed: flight is not merely what the doves do; it is what they are. The verse holds two scales in one motion, a cloudlike arrival and individual lives moving toward an opening.

ALSO GROWS

ʿûp̄: To fly, soar

עוּף

This is the movement pictured in the verse: an arrival carried through the air.

ʿôp̄: A flying creature, bird

עוֹף

The noun shows flight as part of the creature’s nature, joining the doves’ identity to their movement.

The scattered and restless are gathered toward shelter, where many arrivals become a shared homecoming.

But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, and she turned back to him, into the ark, for the waters were upon the face of all the earth. Then he stretched out his hand, and took her, and brought her in to him, into the ark.
Genesis 8:9 · SDVThe dove’s flight ends when she finds a place of shelter and rest.
They shall tremble like a bird from Egypt, and like a dove from the land of Assyria, and I will settle them upon their houses, declares the LORD.
Hosea 11:11 · SDVThe bird and dove images carry many who are returning into the shelter of their houses.
Then he will send out his messengers, and will gather his picked-out ones from the four winds, from the outermost edge of the earth to the outermost edge of the heavens.
Mark 13:27 · SDVThe gathering reaches across every direction, drawing the scattered into one return.
And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarming living soul, and let birds fly over the earth, upon the face of the expanse of the heavens."
Genesis 1:20 · SDV

The Hebrew root ⁨עוף⁩ (ʿ-w-p̄), meaning to fly, appears in both verses: one form names the act of flying, another the flying creature. Genesis places flight in the creature’s nature; Isaiah shows that same movement carrying doves toward an opening.
