King James wording
King James Version
A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.THE KEY
The city’s roar and the temple’s voice converge in the LORD’s own voice, which makes the reckoning audible.
THE MEANING
The reader stands where public noise, the temple, and the LORD’s voice converge. The final voice acts: the LORD repays his enemies. The reckoning is neither hidden from the sacred place nor left unfinished.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that opposition can make itself the final voice: the LORD speaks and brings recompense to his enemies.
THE ROOT
מְשַׁלֵּם
meshallēm
GROWS FROM
שׁלם
To be complete or whole; to make good, repay, or requite.
“repays” in this verse is meshallēm. The verb for repayment belongs to the same root family as wholeness. This does not soften the verse’s force: it presents the LORD’s recompense as what is due, brought to completion.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, welfare
שָׁלוֹם
The shared root links the act of repayment with wholeness, giving the reckoning a sense of setting what is due in order.
shillēm: To repay, make good, requite
שִׁלֵּם
This verbal branch shows the action inside “rendereth”: what is owed receives its due return.
THE PATTERN
The LORD’s voice makes judgment audible and reserves recompense to God.
According to their deeds, so he will repay; heat to those who press him, repayment to his enemies; to the coastlands he will make recompense whole.Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but give room to wrath. For it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will give back, says the LORD.The seventh messenger pours out his bowl into the air, and a great voice comes out of the temple, from the throne, saying, It is done.THE THREAD
According to their deeds, so he will repay; heat to those who press him, repayment to his enemies; to the coastlands he will make recompense whole.Isaiah 59:18 uses יְשַׁלֵּם (yeshallēm, “he repays”) and גְּמוּל (gemul, “recompense”), then names “his enemies.” Isaiah 66:6 gathers the same Hebrew terms into a voice from the city and temple: the sound is the announcement of the reckoning.
