King James wording
King James Version
Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.THE KEY
The instruction is sealed among the learners, so the keepers of testimony remain its students.
THE MEANING
The testimony is bound close, and the instruction is sealed among those being taught. What is entrusted is held within a learning community, where it is kept and carried forward.
THE ROOT
תּוֹרָה
tōrāh
GROWS FROM
ירה
y-r-h
To direct, teach, or point the way; Torah is instruction and guidance.
The word translated “law” is instruction rooted in directing and teaching. Sealed among learners, it carries guidance forward through those who continue to receive it.
ALSO GROWS
yārāh: To direct, teach, or shoot.
יָרָה
It reveals the guiding action beneath Torah: instruction points a way forward.
mōreh: One who teaches.
מוֹרֶה
The teacher shares the root of Torah, linking the instruction with the one who conveys it.
לִמֻּדָי
limmuday
GROWS FROM
למד
l-m-d
To learn or be taught.
“learners” in this verse is limmuday. “Disciples” names people through their relation to learning. The testimony is kept among those being taught, and the same learner-word family appears in Isaiah 50:4.
ALSO GROWS
lāmad: To learn.
לָמַד
The verb shows that disciples are learners, not only members of a group.
limmudim: People who are taught; learners.
לִמּוּדִים
Isaiah 50:4 uses this form for “the learned,” connecting the keeper of instruction with a person whose ear remains open to teaching.
צְרֹר
ṣĕrōr
GROWS FROM
צרר
ṣ-r-r
To bind, tie, or wrap together.
The root gives “bind up” the image of gathering testimony into a secured form. Its consonants echo צַר (ṣar, narrow or constricted), a sound-shape that adds a sense of compression without making it the same three-letter root.
ALSO GROWS
ṣĕrôr: A bundle or tied-up packet.
צְרוֹר
The noun makes the verb’s image tangible: what is bound is gathered and held together.
ṣar: Narrow, tight, or constricted.
צַר
It shares the consonants ṣ-r and echoes the pressure of binding; this is a consonant echo, not the same three-letter root.
THE PATTERN
Instruction is preserved by entrusting it to learners who can carry it onward.
And you shall sharpen them to your children, and speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk along the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.But you, Daniel, stop up the words, and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall multiply. And these things you heard from me among many witnesses, place beside steady people who will be able to teach others also.THE THREAD
The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the trained, so that I might know how to sustain the faint one with a word. Morning by morning he rouses, he rouses my ear to hear and respond as the trained do.“The learned” translates לִמּוּדִים (limmudim, those being taught), from למד (l-m-d, learn), the same word family as “disciples” in Isaiah 8:16. Together, the verses show instruction held among learners who keep receiving it.
